Yes Prime Minister - Smokers are national benefactors

Sir. Humphrey argues that cigarette taxes pay for a third of the cost of the National Health Service. We're saving many more lives than we otherwise could because of those smokers who voluntarily lay down their lives for their friends.

I always loved the argument that smokers die younger, and that more than offsets the cost of smoking related diseases. It ruins the argument that everybody should ban smoking because of social costs. In the UK, their own government calculated this, and in the Czech Republic, the leading cigarette company calculated this.
