I'm on the fence about getting this. On the one hand it looks neat but on the other hand I am hesitant to invest any more money into the Amazon ecosystem with their pushing of ads, possibility of charging for Alexa, and overall stagnation of their smarthome features (routines still aren't very robust after all these years and we still can't get a reliable push button to launch routines)

Thanks much Brian for posting this. I loved my old spot. It fit perfect in the corner of my sink in the bathroom. It started having a screen glitch several months ago as many of them did. But I still used it because I liked it so much and was part of my daily routine. This replacement is great. I ordered it immediately after viewing the video. In the US it was $44 and came with 5 monthly payments. I'm a happy camper!

No Temperature Sensor in new SPOT like the older DOT. That's a game changer for us, since we use temperature sensing to run some actions. Sound is not better enough to switch from DOT to SPOT , Waste of money to change.

There are some customizations, but I hadn't seen the numbers change color. I did see different styles of text for them and those did have different colors. So hard to tell yet but it looks possible

Hey Brian! Thanks for being first with your review of the latest Echo Show/Pop/spot. Here I go again, throwing pound notes (yup I’m a Brit, and we no longer have pound notes, but hey the image is a good one) at Alexa so Jeff can buy another yacht. I threw out my 4 (yes 4) Echo Spots to get Show 5’s (then updated them with new 5’s when the displays started flickering). Now, I’ve just bought 4 new Spots to replace (relatively) new Show 5’s. When will I learn?! It may only be a few short days/weeks/months before Jeff starts charging me for Alexa, then all 11 Alexas (Alexii?) will be thrown out, and I’ll go back to turning lights on and off like I did in the good old days!! My 4 new Spots are arriving tomorrow (10th July) so once they’re up and running, I may be able to answer some other questions posted here.

Hey don't worry about getting charged for Alexa. As far as I know, that's just for the AI components. But when will you learn? Hey, why learn? Some things are just worth upgrading to the right solution for yourself. It doesn't mean you were wrong in any of the decisions!

@@AutomateYourLife My eight is now showing ads back to back. There have been 10 of them in the last 10 minutes. Three in two minutes for the same ad. That could be bad programming but back to back is policy. If I destroy this second one, I want you to link to the video :) BTW: For those that don't know. It's the light sensor that triggers the ads.

I liked the flex for its cheap price, in limited situations; put one in the hallway with a nightlight and one in a tiny bathroom for outdoor motion announcements and smart commands when needed. The addons like the nightlight and motion detector were neat. If they make another one with better speakers and keep it cheap, I'd seriously consider a couple.

I gave up on the echo displays, it's been too long without any significant upgrade for even processing speed. The echo dot with clock is the superior echo by far. No ads, presence detective, clock, timer and did I mention no ads lol.

I got myself one of these and overall I am happy. It does have annoying thing though. On my Echo Show 8 I can say "Miss A screen (or display) off" and the screen goes completely black. However on the echo spot this does not seem to work, Miss A just sayas "hmm I am having trouble turning off the screen, please try again later". If I try do it as a typed command from the Alex app on my phone it says Echo Spot doesn't support thit. For an item designed especially with bedrooms in mind this seems crazy... night mode is all well and good but the screen is still fairly bright

Looks cute, but I will give it a miss. Amazon crippled my smarthome by restricting access to their API and I had to rewrite all of my room aware automations as I couldn't reliably query any more which echo I had spoken to. No more Echo devices for me.

Hmm might wait to see how these behave post release before considering one or two. If they can always show the time unless asked something else, and show time remaining on more than one timer from start to zero, I could see adding them to 1-2 rooms to replace existing dots. That said, I don't see online but do you know if they have an audio out jack? I have a few dots plugged into much better sound systems so I'd need that feature (Bluetooth doesn't work for these applications).

Amazon smart home was so innovative at first but they have stop innovate lately and started taking always features and just gave up. It all started when the head guy from the smart home division left and Amazon cut funding to that deportment.

I don't. That's one of those details we have to see. My sense is this will have a mode that's very dim or even off. Most of their displays have it today, and ya...the red clock should be there too. But I can't tell you for sure!

I bought one. Clock has a red display at night, if you turn on light sensing and night mode, it will automatically be red at night. I'm extremely sensitive to light and the red light doesn't bother me at all.

Might trade my Show 5 for this for the bedroom. I wonder how the clock looks in night mode. On my Show 5 (previous gen), the night mode clock is blurry without my glasses on. Kind of defeats the purpose. Plus, y'know, the ads aren't endearing the Show 5 to me either.

They will find a way to send ads and other visual cues that drive you nuts. I've had in my house a dozen speakers and 5 displays. All the displays have been given away or smashed, excluding the echo show 15, which I hate but I need a 15 inch monitor. The speakers are really good at chucking at a brick wall. Not sure if Amazon is irritating people on purpose to prepare for their upgraded ai assistant, but Alexa had most definitely gotten hard of hearing and sending in the last year. Brian, I know the VAST majority of smart home users are Amazon, Google, Apple, but please try to bridge people's knowledge. All three are definitely going backwards in usefulness. Matter seems to be stalled and imho will be vaporware. I personally bet on Zigbee, and being a Hubitat user that's ok, but it seems like Z-wave is the new winner, especially with their long range devices. I'm not sure what to recommend to you, but the big 3 seem to be actively holding back smart home usefulness as of late.

Nothing is perfect for sure, but I do think these are good steps by Amazon. It's not all happening at once. There are options, but there are drawbacks to each one. That's where it's not a simple "do this" kind of message from me. Sorry!

I’m can do anymore Amazon hardware. Any of their screens are too slow and featureless to be much use for anyone these days. Time to figure out an open source solution we can hijack something like a fire tablet or something with better processor and make our own hub. I know home assistant has something similar but it just doesn’t seem streamlined enough for most people
