The US, Canada and Australia were more irrational on COVID policy than Europe in general. Not that we were OK either, but in many cases we did try to be more nuanced. E.g., in UK, no masking for kids. However, how the US acted has nevertheless been a big contributor to increased distrust of scientific and technological authorities in general.

The US can't afford to fund the world. We're 36 trillion dollars in debt. We have got to slash spending everywhere. Foreign aid can resume when we have a balanced budget, and not one day before that. So, other than keeping the lights on at the UN buildings, not one dollar should go toward any programs, again, until we have a balanced budget. 17 billion to the UN alone, is insane.

We have our own politicized science based organizations to deal with - yes, the who is not only excess bad baggage but it's also expensive, bad and political baggage. Perspective: Do lockdowns work? Yes, depends how draconian and how convinced the population is of the realistic danger - this bug did not require it. Take one with say 0.3 ifr across all ages and the story changes a bit. There is a pattern, a political "move" here and looks like it's continuing over much of the western world in other ways - the pandemic was just the starting event.

Organizations for science and degrees in science, etc are partly meant as a quick credential check to determine whether an opinion or individual or group has integrity in these fields. When these organizations and designations are used by those who aren't guided primarily by scientific methods they are no longer useful to the people. The credential of doctor gives one authority because every individual does not have time to investigate as doctor to determine if they are qualified in their field. if you start calling people doctors for instance because you agree with their politics and not because they are qualified in their field, the designation of doctor becomes useless to determine whether or not they are qualified in their field.

I don't think people realize how deep this actually goes and just how connected all the pieces are. I used to think it was just big pharma being big pharma and using their political influence as usual but as influential as they are, I don't think they have the political and media influence required to do it on a global scale. Companies like Blackrock and Vanguard do though and were heavily invested in not only vaccines but PPE as well. Public policy makes all the sense in the world when you look at through the lens of corporate profit.

Not necessarily. The CDC and NIH are directly impacted by Presidential executive orders and legislation. They can be "fixed" to actually deal with Health issues and effective mitigation of pandemics that are science-based, not opinion based. RFK Jr. and Jay Bhattacharya will have a dramatic impact on how they operate.
