The material is even but there is a nice variation to be found here. How can white win this?

Easy puzzle. Rule 1: Attack! Rule 2: Don't let the king out of the corner. Rule 3: Drive him deeper into a corner. Rule 4: In a puzzle at least one figure must be sacrificed.

I was not nearly close to find the solution. I considered moving the rook as the correct first move but wrongly concluded that I would just loose it :-(

You shown a win, queen Vs queen more or less similar, in which this one reverts. So I saw the solution quickly.

I found the rook sacrifice but wasn’t sure if it would work with the queen taking.

I failed because I was trying to get it in 2 moves. My mistake because nowhere did you say this was going to be checkmate in two moves.

Neat. Mandatory position after Qxb8 and we can't get enough of repetition, can we? Great content as always

Ra1+ if qxa1 then Qxb8 and black does not have a decent counter to the mating threat via Qa8, Qa7, or Qb3. If kxa1 then Qg1+ ka2; Qa7# 😁

Not so hard, this one, but a nice tactic! Ra1 is really the only forcing move in the start position, then the rook capture on b8 puts Black in zugzwang.

Yes, a nice tactic. But I guess "zugzwang" is the wrong term in this context, as there are threats like Qb3#, Qa8#, and Qa7#. There is no way to prevent all of them.

@@ralkadde Yes, I misused the term. True zugzwang is when there are no threats _until_ the other player moves.

Queen can move any way the rook moves so why is the under promotion so important? I know I’m missing something very basic and obvious, beginner.
