We got our first cows in November of 2022. I, like yourself, had 0% experience. The first lesson I had to learn was patience! Not only with the cows, but also with myself. There's always challenges, but those challenges force you to learn, adapt, and get a little more efficient.

Soil microbes are also partners! Great job feeding them, too!

Looks like the cool season grasses are holding up real well in your pastures so far this year. Soil microbes, dung beetles, other bugs, fungi & worms appreciate that bit of hay, manure & urine left behind by the cattle. In return they leave their waste & worm castings that feeds the soil, builds top soil & improves pasture into lush thick grass with better deeper root systems that can utilize deeper ground water in the summer heat, drought & feeds the cattle 9 - 10+ months a year with appropriate rotation. Unrolling grass hay also distributes any grass seed in it over the soil & over seeds. Continuous soil building & feeding pastures will continue to make the grass better & better every year, provides more forage growth & allows for more regrowth & grazing passes over the fields. At the $30.00 a roll you pay for hay that is much cheaper than it would cost you to hay your fields or lease hay ground to make hay. Buying haying equipment, parts, fuel, oil, hydraulic fluid, rolls of net wrap or bailing twine, $$ & your time fixing break downs, maintaining the equipment, tractor seat time, & etc. You are saving money, time, busted knuckles & frustration buying hay to feed in the winter & using your grass for rotational grazing from Spring flush through end of Fall & longer if the grass holds out. If you had a 50+ head herd & calving it would be worth it but not for feeding a small 10-15 head herd 3 - 4 months in the winter.

Look at that beautiful grass! Almost January and sustainable farming practices are making a show. Looks like the cows did a great job cleaning up that ole hay some people were complaining about, ha. They left just enough to feed the soil, awesome! Blessings

Happy birthday to your brother. I think pigs and cows are the two easiest animals to raise.

I can't wait to be able to raise our own beef. We have to fix a lot of the fencing. Whoever owned this farm, before us, didn't take care of it. We're repairing quite a bit. It's just so expensive. We have a lot of coyotes here, so we have to go the extra mile to keep them out. It's so frustrating seeing people not taking care of their properties.

I'm not a farmer i guess I'm a city slicker but I don't get it when people say your wasting hay when you unroll hay back to the soil I think its meant to be redistributed back to the land it makes sense unrolling hay its about working smarter not harder Chuck keep doing what you doing man shout out from SoCal LA .
@Marilou-g5t9 күн бұрын
Unrolled hay helps you encourage ruminants to fertilize (urine and manure) the area on and near the hay.

It would be interesting to know what kind of grass you have in your state. Have you planted this pasture or is this what grows naturally? What is your climate like? Doesn't the hay that is left after they eat what they will kill back the grass it is laying on ? Thank you.

Hi Chuck, I've been wondering for a while now, do you ever have any problems with ticks on your pastured pigs or cattle? Seeing deer loaded with ticks every fall, I'd think they would bother livestock too?
@markellis67279 күн бұрын
Its Friday morning here while watching this, looks like you guys might get some white stuff tonight or tomorrow, made me wonder, in bad winter weather do you still unroll your hay, or do you have a dry spot to feed, or in a wooded area ? Just wondering

Hello great video love watching y'all videos. How much does it cost per month to raise a cow to you get ready to process it. How much do you need for one cow to live in.

How much hay would two cows eat in a month?
@ronbrendag71318 күн бұрын
Rough calculation for planning is 20 to 30 lbs of average quality hay per 1000 lbs of cattle per day for maintenance. For growth need higher quality and or quantity.

Might want to just put in one of the hay rings you said you have. then you can move it with the cattle. less waste and you still get the carbon in the soil spread out.
