It was my going away party -- a week before deploying to Vietnam.
A lot of the people in this film are gone -- but, not forgotten.

I think the hardest part of growing old is you are still that same young person in your mind and heart but the body just won't follow suit anymore. Beautiful song and video, thank you for your service and this wonderful time from your life.

That's me Barb, I'm going to be 72 in June, my wife passed almost 4 years ago. I'm in great health & I think i have a very young heart. But my heart grows lonely as women a few years younger say I'm too old & those my age or older say I look to young & energetic. What is a fellow suppose to do? This morning my 1st thought was that this stormy Friday would be a good day to die but its 2am Saturday & here I am.............

When I was young I used to hear the grown-ups say: "Youth is wasted on the young." I never knew what that meant. Now that I'm in my 70s, I know. If only I had the strength and health I once knew...and...knew what I know now, I'd have been able to live life in a much better way. No big regrets though...God is forgiving. Beautiful song...I miss Roy Clark.

I'm 61 and I disagree. With what I am doing kids might say I wish I were old. But they're too young to know what they could know. And if I were young again, I'd still want the life I was never allowed to have.

I just turned 60, and I've made conscious--Ive got 20 years, at best--choices. Over the past year I've been living much more in the moment. I go in the ocean every day, no matter how cold, because I feel so alive. I hike in nature every chance I get. The only thing I wish I'd known is how 95% of what I worried about didnt matter at all.

I was 17 in 68, it was a beautiful time to be alive. In my opinion, everything and everybody was so much better in those days. Downside for me was a couple of years later, I was in Vietnam. But I still wouldn’t trade those times for anything.

I was 5 in 1968 the passage of time is a cruel thing. You lose friends and family along the way. You see your youth drift away. Shoulders no longer straight the girls don’t know you exist. The youth that disrespect the old don’t realize how quickly they will be there themselves.

In 68 I was 19, see and understand your point, its true, one word of advice to you, don't listen to everybody's bull shit, don't watch TV news, it's mostly lies, don't trust politicians, if you are alone, find a nice woman to be with and do anything you want and can do. The worst thing to be right now is ALONE, don't be that, find somebody, best of luck from Chicago.....

Wow, I’m the same age almost as Hamburger Hoover, over a few drinks my sister and me counted 19 people we grow up with that are now gone, this are just friends in our age group. I spend as much time as I can doing the things I enjoy, I’m working less, drinking more, spending time with my family and grand child. Life is so short.

I am happy to be counted as one of the elderly. So many of my childhood friends didn’t get to grow old. I have made so many youthful mistakes and survived as well as learned valuable lessons. I’m seeing life as a gift to be savored like a fine wine. Today I am quicker to forgive, slower to anger, and more generous with my smile. I have aches and pains that let me know that I’m not as strong and agile as I once was. These aches and pains also remind of my youthful commitment and dedication to my dreams. Yes, I am happy to be growing older. I know my days on earth are growing short, but I have a lifetime of memories. I have enjoyed the love of a good woman, the security of my family, and the warmth of my friends.

When I was young I scoffed at the ravages of time, it was something old people had to deal with. Now that I'm in my 60's I realize the destructive hands of time. My parents & many loved ones are gone. 2 of my sisters have breast cancer. My entire life I lived behind a false bravado. Now there is nowhere to hide, I have to deal with life's devastating realities.

I miss those times when there wasn’t as much hatred in the world, or so it seemed to me. Things where simpler life was easier not everything was filled with opinions, hatred, and conspiracies. I’ve watched my country turn into a land of turmoil, descent, and despair, where violence is the rule rather than the exception. I pray that the world I leave for my children and grandchildren returns to some sense of respect for each other and those that we may we may not necessarily agree with. It’s okay not to agree, it’s not ok to hate each other for our differences.

What would a man give to go back and change all the things he did wrong..... I was always working wish I had more time with my children and had took more time for my wife maybe she would have stayed And had told mom and dad I loved them more SO young men and women take time for what really matters.... Life is so so short a lesson I wish I learned when I was young....

I miss the little boy I knew and wonder if I really know the man he is now. Yet, it's life . And you and I my friend are alive more completely now , knowing the gift we have and have had isn't standing still. Sing and dance now , live in the moment. Good luck

God bless. My next door farm neighbor, Alex Zsigo, was killed in Vietnam the month I got drafted in 1967. He could drive his John Deere like crazy. i skipped the rank of E2 and E3. I was E4 for a month before getting E5 in 5 months. My buddy, Jesse Carmona, Jr. was killed in Vietnam in 1968. I saw 4 men die at the same time and did not know their names in Vietnam in 1968. I was an OH6A helicopter crew chief with 1st Aviation. My girlfriend dumped me while I was in Vietnam with a "Dear John" letter. Hell, my first name was John. Look these guys up and honor them on Memorial Day. I break down and cry.

This hauntingly beautiful song has always touched me. Even as a kid in the late 60s and 70s I somehow understood the weight of its regret and perspective. I’m nearly 60 now, and the reality that I didn’t heed the foretelling of my own imperfect life, squandering many an opportunity as well as the shining promise of my own potential is incredibly sad to me. But then I think to myself, “Hey, you’re not through and this ain’t over yet.”
@MrHolzheim

You sir, are so right, exactly my sentiments. At nearly 60though, you're still a young man to me. For me at 76 it's too late, but my god I had a good time in the 60's. LOL while I wipe away the tears of regret.

I listened to the lyrics of this song every time I sang it with my high school band. I listened, and I followed through . . . by going after the most in every thing I did, modified only by those who refused to come along -- I went without them when necessary, and did it all. Regrets, yes, I've had a few, but I'd change little if anything. My Life. My way.

I was 15. And I'm so glad I didn't follow my father's advice to put off emigrating to the Caribbean after retirement. I did it at 36 and no regrets. Could have never enjoyed another stage in my life like that at an older age.

Roy Clark was a great singer and guitar singer! Miss so many of the greats singers and performers. I miss that girls and women dressed in dresses and looked like women. The music of the 60s and 70s is just now being discover by young people who haven't known anything but rap for years. They've fallen in love with people like Tom Jones, the Righteous Brothers, the Carpenters, BeeGees, the Moody Blues, and more. They just don't know what they missed!

Now over 70, I am young at heart alas the body has failed to keep up and in my mind I am still young. When young we feel we have an eternity to enjoy, but oh too soon we look back and wonder where the years went. I used to to wish my years away but oh boy, to be young again.

Was in the Navy from 1988-2009, this song always brought a tear to my eye when at sea at times far from home, these years are going by way too fast and pray for a better America, there are things going on that I thought would never happen in my lifetime but have sadly come to pass-endless conflicts, 9/11, a very unstable & divided USA, conflict in Eastern Europe-Ukraine only amplifies whats to come.

When still in the ever changing flows of youth we cannot see what is ahead , the mistakes, the tears, the tragedies, the wrong turnings and the ever lengthening strand of regrets. In the end we are alone with our memories and how we deal with them determines our feelings during the end time.We can but hope we are not bitter not least for those who may share our twilight years.
