"Yesterday’s Newsreel" was created by the Ziv Network using archival footage from the General Newsreel Corp. Each episode was comprised of newsreel footage paired with modern narration. The reels displayed topics such as news from the home front and abroad as well as fashion of the day and various sports stars. This episode features the German defeat of France in WWII and the Battle of Dunkirk. Tom Hale opens the first segment featuring footage from captured German films from June of 1940 (:28). A Panzer tank (:39) heads west for the invasion of Channel Islands. Wrecked Allied equipment lines the roadway (:50). The German army arrives in Dunkirk (:59). French fighter crafts appear (1:04) locked in air combat with the Luftwaffe. A British Spitfire is hit and drops to the ground (1:17). The Dunkirk port appears (1:26) filled with decimated twisted steel. German troops move anti-tank guns into position. Allied evacuation ships and other equipment littler the sand badly damaged from combat (1:45). The camera pans over a sea of French troops (1:59). Many would be funneled into concentration camps (2:06). German troops leave Dunkirk (2:12) moving south for Paris. The bombed out city of La Marne (2:23) follows. This city was also a German target during the First World War. Nazi troops slip from an alley way into the streets for house to house combat (2:26). A French restaurant stands amid the ruin as a Panzer tank runs by (2:57). Flames engulf the city as retreating French troops leave the German’s nothing (3:06). A sign notes the route to Paris and to Soissons (3:10). The Eiffel Tower appears as the Germans pushed for Paris (3:16). Nazi flags are strung up (3:27). The Arc de Triomphe stands in the center (3:33). Nazi troops trot down the streets of France (3:38). General Kurt von Briesen salutes the troops (3:45). Nazi’s march around the Compiegne railway car (3:53). Footage appears from June 21st at 3:15pm (4:02) as Hitler and staff, including Goering, Hess, von Braun, and von Ribbentrop, enter the railway car (4:06). French officers include Charles Huntziger (4:17). Hitler appears gleeful on June 21st 1940 (4:36). Hugo Zacchini; circus performer (4:58) and son of notable painter Ildebrando Zacchini, readies for a stunt in 1929. He climbs atop a cannon (5:03) and is fired out like a human cannonball (5:13). He jumps to the ground unharmed and unshaken (5:23). Slow motion footage follows (5:28). The narrator mentions the act was a family affair as his brother fired the cannon and his sister would later partake in the act (5:34). Celebrity personalities of 1924 begins with Amelita Galli-Curci; a notable soprano singer (5:57). She plays at a party for kindergarten children (6:00). Dr. Charles Horace Mayo (6:13) and brother Will (6:17) founded the famed Mayo Clinic in 1914. Warren Harding is pictured as the Dr. had traveled to Washington to tend to Harding’s ailing wife (6:22). On June 26th 1919, the steamer Lake Granby sails from Chicago (6:46) bound for Europe. The drawbridge on the Chicago River opens for the ship’s passage (6:50). Granby would pass a series of locks through the Great Lakes (7:00). The city of Chicago appears in the background as it was becoming an international seaport (7:06). Footage from 1918 features Jackie Coogan and Chauncey Depew (7:24) the railroad tycoon. Coogan operates the controls at the Grand Central station (7:26). Coogan appears at the Croton-Harmon station in New York (7:32). Coogan is lifted into the train (7:41). Fans wave to the young boy (7:48). The Sikorsky amphibious plane (8:08); the S-40 appears constructed in 1931. Igor Sikorsky follows (8:12). The plane skims over the water’s surface on its first flight (8:20). Howard Hughes’ H-4 Hercules (8:49) aka the Spruce Goose was completed following WW2 (8:49). Hughes follows (8:57). Sally Anderson presents 1922 era fashion (9:34) in Palm Beach, Florida. Beach fashion is featured including fashionable swim suits and accessories such as the parasol (9:41) and the dolman coat (10:06). 1926 sports stars include Tad Jones at the 1926 Yale Bowl (10:34). Jack Lovelock runs in a duel track meet in London 1934 (11:26).

Because England invented them in WW1

​@@christupper0No. The British invented them during the Boer War, more than a decade earlier. James Joyce uses the term in his Ulysses (1922).

The Nazi concentration camp of Dachau was already in use in 1939. It was the first one.
