While I was on Chase's band, Sandy Sandberg from Holton asked me if I wanted to have dinner with Maynard. Well of course! We met at an Italian restaurant in Chicago. There were 4 people at our table--Maynard, Sandy, another young trumpet player and me. Unknown to me, the other trumpet player and myself were being screened for the job. While we were at the restaurant, Chase walked in with Maynard's trumpet section. What are the odds of that? Hmmm. Anyway, I got the job......

My scholastic background in music is quite limited, while my performance background is far beyond the scope of KZbin. Briefly, though, my first big gig was Chase in 1973. I was 21. I then played with Maynard, moved to LA (played with lots of great bands/players), then with Buddy, moved to NY, then Thad/Mel, and moved to Vegas at the end of 1976. I quit playing trumpet in 1993 when live music pretty much vanished in Vegas. I've been a Steadicam op, inventor, day trader, photographer, etc...

I believe Lynn meant Donald Reinhardt, a brass teacher of great reknown. Don Hahn was a trumpet player with Maynard while Lynn was on the band. You can see and hear Don on the "At the Top" video/DVD. A marvelous player.

I listen here in amazement, being a trumpet player that couldn't even come close to what you do. Impressive then, and you're equally impressive today. I am one of the few that had the pleasure of seeing you perform Mac Park live when you were with Maynard at Disneyland back in the 70s. I've heard many great trumpet players on Mac Park, you're still my favorite, and I love the way you change it up just a little each time. Thanks for posting.

Knocks me out! Lynn was playing the lead on that fairly obscure chart "Pocahontas" on the MF3 album roughly at the same time as the above video. He was whacking out all the High B Flats, A's an G's on that chart right along with Maynard in live concert. I knew from that moment that there was something that he was doing that I couldn't do. At least at that time lol.

OH MAN! Now I have more ideas to deal with. We expect to do this chart for a jazz festival in June. Give me somthing easier to copy and still remain above the staff. BTW, I expect to travel in July to LV. Keep the heads up on that as there will be enough advance notice for such. The place has always intrigued me as well.

With the Maynard Ferguson protocol, is softer jazz still able to be done. (As in non commercial). I mean if I wanted to play some standards in a coffee shop, would I be too loud? Is the low and middle register nonexistent?
@lynn954416 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delayed response.... Your question slipped by..... Correctly used, the MF Protocol engages only when you start to run out of range. Your normal way of playing in your current range is unchanged. Part of the beauty of the Protocol is that it is noninvasive, an adjunct TO, not a replacement FOR your normal way of playing..... :)

I hope you don't mind a few more fan-like questions. If not, what is your trumpet/musical background? Any music schools? Teachers? Professional groups/bands before and after Maynard? I read somewhere that you once played a Jet-Tone T1A. I collect vintage Jet-Tones so what was it about them that you once liked? Finally, one more question. What was it like playing with Chase? Was he as nurturing as Maynard

Question: in your opinion, what is the main determinant of a trumpet player attaining extreme range such as you exemplify: knowing the right way to practice, or is it having a particular embouchere that favors high notes? Also, hypothetically speaking: if you taught a trumpet student for five years or so, let's say of average talent but exceptional work ethic, what are the odds this aspirant would be able to learn to smack notes above double high C with authority? Again, I'm trying to get at, how much of what you do with range is teachable, and how much of it is being mysteriously gifted? I remember back in the day, I worked extremely hard to extend my range without much success. Meanwhile, I would occasionally encounter dudes who were righteous screechers, yet didn't particular work hard like I did... so I wonder! Anyways, thanks much for posting the videos, I enjoy then very much.

could be too tight. if it's not tight enough, you might be pushing (in) too much. that could be a problem either way. just make sure you think forward more - in your corners, aperture and over-all thought. i hope that helps. just my 2 cents ;-)

The MF Protocol generally doesn't become fully engaged until you are in the upper register. Generally, the Protocol is not required in the cruising range, where a more conventional approach is more appropriate.... :)
