Grooming A Samoyed Dog - Oval Brush

Grooming a Samoyed dog with a 35mm Chris Christensen oval pin brush. It’s a perfect dog brush for getting deep into a Samoyed’s coat. It’s a gentle, yet sturdy brush, that doesn’t scratch their skin. It has long tines, to effortlessly comb through their fur.
This is the first step I use in brushing my Samoyed. You want to start brushing a Samoyed, with using long tines and with either an oval or slicker brush, due to their long, thick coat. You want to begin with a brush that has larger gaps between the tines, to gently loosen mats. Once your Samoyed dog is brushed by the oval brush, you may move to the slicker with long tines, or a comb.
The Chris Christensen brushes linked below, have longer tines, made for dogs with long, thick, double coats, like Samoyeds, Huskies, Malamutes, etc. The shorter the dog’s coat, the shorter you can go with the brush tines.

Love his little sneezes. Watched a few of your grooming videos. I FINALLLLLLY broke down and did the right thing. Bought some CC brushes. Such a tough decision of which sizes, as they are expensive. Ended up getting the 27 pin brush, the Big K slicker, and the Little G for the under arms and legs. My girl isn't as big as Yeti, so I hope I like the sizes.

If her coat is thicker, the Big G slicker works better. The Big K has fewer tines, but they work in a similar way. Glad you bought the CC Big K. It is a great slicker. The price point speaks to the quality. They’re exceptionally well made and have rounded pin heads, making it more comfortable for your dog.

​@@YetisPlace Yes, she is spayed, so her coat is incredibly thick. Now I see that I should have gotten a Big G instead of the Big K. It seems like the Little g that I got goes through her thick fur better. So at least I do have that. I'm really loving that pin brush though, that's amazing!! It's been very nice to brush out my Yakutian Laika and my Sammy. I am very happy that I finally got these brushes. ☺️

HI, my Samoyed still smells even after a groom, I am not sure why, do you know if this is normal or any products to eliminate this please. thank you

You can create a mix of a nice smelling, white colored, either dog or human conditioner. Fill a spray bottle with 2 oz of the conditioner, with the rest water. Shake it and spray it on your dog while grooming. It’ll help the odor. If it doesn’t, I would ask your vet why your dog smells. Could be an infection somewhere that you cannot see. I am thinking of getting a Samoyed, my partner is allergic to dogs and I have read that they produce low levels of dander so he shouldn't struggle with them, and of course they are adorable! I work from home full time also so it would rarely get left alone and we have both had dogs in the past so we are confident with training. I am just worried about the constant shedding and their grooming needs

I've seen people recommend the Chris Christensen Ice Slip Dematting Brush in some Samoyed groups. Have you had any experience with that one? Or any idea of how that would compare to the CC brush that you are demonstrating her?

Yes, I have the exact brush you’re talking about. It has 20 mm rounded, immovable pins. It’s designed to get out those tough mats and tangles. It’s gentle, doesn’t scratch, won’t hurt your dog. The pins are thicker, won’t move. It’s a brush designed specifically for mats and tangles. The CC Oval brush in this video, is designed as one of the first brushes you’ll use, after detangling, demating. It has long 35 mm pins, that are thinner, super flexible, in a soft, flexible, rubber base that moves.

@@YetisPlace I've signed up, but actually, I do not have a problem with Bobo my 15 month Samoyed barking! I know, I know, I am very lucky! The one time he really barked during a walk was when he had to fast that day due to a medical issue... my sister was with me, and she said he was 'hangry', lol. He occasionally yips in a friendly way, when meeting another dog, or yips to let me know he wants to get going on his 1st walk of the day. What I have had a problem with is Bobo jumping up when he wants something... for instance, when I did not go to the corner store and he wanted to go there, or when I have a fabric bag and he wants to get at it, or when I am carrying some groceries, or when I went to the local Farmer's Market and bought some chicken sausages, or when we were coming home from our walk and met the 7 year-old neighbour boy (and that scared him). I am not sure why he jumped on the boy: he is usually amazingly calm and good with kids and they can pet him and he is perfectly behaved. This makes it sound like he jumps up a lot, but really, it is only occasional and lasts for mere seconds. However, I do not want him jumping up, and certainly I do not want him jumping up on kids!

I have multiple brushes for my Sammy and I’m thinking about investing in CC brushes to make my life easier. Was thinking about buying the big G and now after watching your video, I will add the pin brush too. You’ve mentioned that you will soon get either the big K or the big G, do you prefer one over the other?

Hello joy ja. I have 5 CC brushes now. I have links to the brushes and combs, under my videos and in my website, yetisplace.dog. I really like the Big G and Baby G brushes for the deep grooming. Both of them, have a lot of long bristles. The Big K has fewer pins if you prefer that option. I also have the 35mm oval, used as the first step in my routine with Yeti. It works well to loosen matts and cleaning their coats. I have the 27mm t-brush too, which is held like the Big G/K, with a similar amount of bristles to the 35mm oval. Allows you to hold it in a different position. I also have the 505 Buttercomb. Yeti doesn’t care much for combs. My order of grooming, is to start with the 35mm oval, followed by the 27mm t-brush. I finish using the Big G and the Baby G, which is wonderful for Yeti’s ears, around his ears, armpits and along his hocks. If you like using a comb, I would use that as the final grooming step.

Hello , I have a Samoyed her name is Luna , I’m wondering she is currently shedding A LOT and above her back legs (her thigh) there is fur but it is very thin . This concerns me as I may think she has some sort of problem . Do you know anything about this ? And if so could you please share ? -thank you

Sams blow their coats twice annually. Especially if they are young and blowing their puppy coats. Yeti sometimes have patches of his fur that shed epically, like his front leg, below his knee. Yeti once had a bacterial infection, where he lost a patch along his back, down to his pink skin, that was as big as a dinner plate. It spread to a few areas. His vet put him in on an antibiotic and the shedding stopped. It took a year for the fur to grow back. I would bring Luna to see the vet. More than likely, it’s normal coat blowing. But, in the event it’s not, Luna’s vet will be able to stop it.

I brush Yeti everyday to a few times weekly. They shed all year. Their epic coat blows happen twice yearly, but it’s hard to say when. Yeti had an epic coat blow in January, which is the coldest month of the year where we live. A lot of snow.

My puppy is 4 months old. Would you recommend CC brush for a little puppy like this? I struggle with brushing my dog so much! He is such a great puppy, but brushing is not his thing. :)

I absolutely would recommend a CC brush for a young puppy. They feel nice against their skin, no sharp bristles. Start out by brushing only a few minutes each day. Have treats to reward, the whole time using a soothing voice.

Hello i have a question. Can you give me a quick answer.I heard that the samoyed hardly drools and low dander levels. does that make it hypoallergenic for people who have allergic to dander and drools?

They don’t drool as their mouth turns upwards, to prevent drooling in the cold. But, everything and I mean everything gets stuck deep within their coat and triggers allergies for people allergic to environmental allergens. If you have allergies to dander and drool, please get a thorough allergy testing to see if you’re allergic to anything else, as Sammies are not hypoallergenic dogs.

My nephew is allergic to dogs. He always sneezes and gets congested around all Sammies. Talk to a breeder and visit with them, in their house. Ask them about the allergies and see how you react hours after being around all their Sams. I’m not a doctor, so I cannot speak on behalf of allergens. The best thing to do is talk to a doctor and talk to a breeder, while being exposed to them. I would hate for you to get a dog you adore, only for you have to give him back to the breeder, due to allergies.

Many times those who say Sammies are hypoallergenic, have never been around a Sam. I wouldn’t take advice from the internet and Google searches. Talk to an allergist doctor and breeders. Your friend could have minor allergies. I have allergies to outdoor things and always have a tough time when Yeti brings them home in his coat, even while being on allergy medicine. I started an allergy treatment designed to get me used to what I’m allergic to, which will take a few years of treatment before I’m no longer allergic.

Sams shed regardless. Grooming makes them look pretty and gets rid of the loose fur. You can’t prevent a Sam from shedding.

Hi Yeti place my name is nick and my family dog is a greyhound named Jessy but I never really liked greyhounds so once my dog goes to the rainbow bridge in the sky we are going to get a new dog but sadly I am allergic to dogs but I heard Sammy dogs don’t have dandruff but they have a LOT of fur but once I saw a picture of them I FELL IN LOVE 😍 my mom seems to be ok with the idea but my dad on the other hand I don’t think is a fan he says “oh what other dog to get than a greyhound” and I always think A LOT but I also heard they are a little expensive so if you could tell me we’re I might be able to find one (probably a male puppy new born) I would REALLY appreciate it and could you tell me if they are good with people that are allergic to dogs 🐶 thank you so much and stay safe 😷 (also I live near a park right down the street and there is a trail not to far from my house so is this a good environment for a Samoyed?) and sorry if I am asking too many questions 😅

One parent could be more likely to want to get a dog, or a specific breed of dog. When I was little, my Dad, me and my brothers and sister all wanted a dog. We out ruled Mom. We got a dog. An American Eskimo, named Muppet. Mom didn’t pay attention to Muppet, but because she worked from home, he loved my Mom and followed her around everywhere. Your Dad could like Greyhounds, because you’ve had Jessy. Maybe when he was little, he saw Greyhounds and fell in love with them. If you live in the United States, the one and only place I would recommend to find a Samoyed, is the SamoyedClubOfAmerica. They’re a reputable site and list very good, responsible breeders. You would pay anywhere from $1500 - over $3000 for a Sam, depending on your breeder, time breeding, dog show experience, some breeders own champions and grand champions, so their puppies are more expensive. You can anticipate being on a long waiting list. Responsible breeders don’t have many puppies throughout the year. Living not far from a dog park, would help give your Sammy the needed exercise. They do enjoy walking on trails too. Everywhere their family goes, they need to go. They need a lot of daily activity.

Hello Yeti Place!! I've been watching multiple videos on how to train/groom etc with this dog as I've been wanting this dog for about 4 months now. I have experience with dogs my whole life, but never had my "own" dog as most dogs my family has owned. I think I'm finally prepare to own this dog now after doing so much research, and watching multiple videos so I can provide the best for my Samoy when I get one. Google says $650-1500, but most Samoys I've noticed go for $1500-3000. I'm trying to get a Male Sammy. Hello, Preston! Sammies do need training, walks, playtime and plenty of daily mental stimulation. They’re demanding pups and are quick to figure out exactly how to get what they want. Between 4 months and 2 years, they become crazy dogs, testing even the best owners skills. However after 2 years old, even though their energy never fades, they become more calm and the greatest dogs.

Your price points are quite a bit under what a Sam costs. You want to get from a reputable breeder. Because you’re in the USA, only go to the website SamoyedClubOfAmerica.org. Contact some of those breeders in California who are listed on there. You’ll find very reputable breeders who have many champions and grand champions, along with a good reputation within the Samoyed community.

Xiomara hates being bruished so it doesn´t get done a lot. Her Dadais the same but her Mum is happy to be brushed. I have a brush similar to the one you are using but the spines are shorter. Yesterday she was attacked by what I think is a pitbull which has escpaed from its yard. My sheep in wolf`s clothing was soon on her back and so I shouted at the pitbull and managed to get it off her. it was barking and growling and Xiomara was barking with a high-pitched "I am huritng" sound.´Tne pit bull was blocking our path but I wasn´t going to let it intimidate us. I took off my sunglasses and stared it in the eyes and told it to go away. I then got Xiomara on my other side and continued shouting at the pit bull to stand down. Once we had got past its house it stood in the middle of the road but didn't bother us anynore- it migth sound dangerous to confront a pit bull but I am 6 foot and he probably was intimidated when I stared him in the face. If it had bitten me i would have gone to the police and reported it and the dog would have been put down. Later in the day i went to complain to the owners. They were not in but a friend had arrived so i told him thatg if this happened again I would go to the polce since th dog could have attacked a child. Today ti wasnt outisde in the yard, which it normallu is. Here in Spain if you haev a large dog or what is consiudered to be a dangerous breed you have to register with the local police. I checked Xioamra for injuries and apart form amark on her muzzle she is OK: Her Mum Nube has trouble with infections in her ears and had to have the inside ear removed on one side. Unfrotunately the problem perisited with her other ear and that too is beign removed so the poor darling will be deaf. Very sad,

I’m glad you and Xiomara are ok. I dislike pit bulls as they can often attack unprovoked and owned by people who don’t understand them. Dogs should never be left outside alone like that. In the USA, if you own a pit bull, it’s difficult to get home owners insurance. I haven’t been able to brush Yeti much, because I have thoracic outlet syndrome in my right shoulder/arm. Caused by carrying heavy book bags on my right shoulder. My right collarbone pinches into the blood vessels, causing numbness and pain. I had it under control during college and up until October 2020. I had always worked in places where they have have slide out keyboard/mouse trays, which keep my arms down. Since working from home for just a few weeks shy of a year, (Covid) I have my keyboard/mouse sitting on my desk. My shoulder has been screaming at me. I ordered a new desk, that I can raise/lower, with a slide out keyboard/mouse tray. Should be coming early next week. I can’t wait. I can brush Yeti more using his Chris Christensen brush, which feels so nice. I’ll eventually get one of their slicker brushes too (expensive brush that’s really nice). Yeti actually likes being brushed with the CC brush. I’m really impressed!

Poor you. Pit bulls do get a bad press but they are not all agrressive... it often depends on the owner. The dog in question is always out in the yard during the day while the owners are not there. Today they were home and had the front door open and there ws no sign of the dog. Perhaps someone else complained and it wss removed. I have worked at home for more than 12 years now. I expect Yeti loves having you at home. Yes... you must get the correct desk....
