Unless you were buying rare lp's from someone like Dave Canfield back in the 70's and 80's, very few Americans ever heard of this magnificent composer/conductor Yevgeny Svetlanov who was the Soviet Union's premiere musician of his generation. How sad that politics has denied people from all over the world the full spectrum of wonderful music out there, most yet to be discovered. Thanks very much for this lovely upload!

A very pleasant surprise as, prior to this upload, the only other composition by Svetlanov I'd heard was the Festive Poem (included on an EMI Melodiya LP of Myaskovsky's music back in the 1970s). Inevitably, the nature of the ensemble gives the piece a pastoral quality and, to my ears, the strings seem not dissimilar to those in British folk-inspired compositions. The harp itself is played beautifully here by Tolstaya, her technique ranging from gently idyllic, with wondrous arpeggios, to rhythmically vigorous (including rapping the frame with her knuckles). Thanks very much for sharing this rarity.

The opening.... a "wow" moment. I thought I was in 'Alan Stivell' territory for a brief moment.

*Morning/Afternoon (*delete where applicable) Rodders! Yes, the harp is very much to the fore in this recording, isn't it? Good to see that Melodiya's recording techniques extended to instruments other than brass :)
