[Video Descriptions: Video 1/3: Jon in his artwork place with brown/tan art tools, boxes, and supplies in background. Jon greeted and signed directly to the camera and then pointed his “Persistiveness” artwork next to him. End of message, Jon asked for Kayla and pulled out his phone and then signed to the phone.
Hello! This is the last print of this artwork, titled “Persistiveness“. This piece is very important to me, and hopefully to you all as well, because we are celebrating Deaf Awareness Month. Let me share a little about my upbringing. Looking back, I went to a mainstream school and would have a great time socializing with my friends. When it was time to go home, it was much less social. I thought maybe this was normal. But this isn’t the case current, because DCS has youth and family services. Let me reach out to someone who specializes in this, Kayla. Hello Kayla! I wanted to know if you could explain a little about what YFS is?
Video 2 of 3:
2/3: Kayla in her corner of board games on wooden shelf next to whiteboard, on right side, and American Sign Language (ASL) Handshapes poster and Caterpillar ASL signs poster on teal wall, on left side. Kayla pulled out her phone and signed to the phone, and then Kayla put away the phone and signed directly to the camera. End of message, Kayla asked for Jon and took her phone and then signed to the phone and walked away.
It’s good to see you! What’s YFS? What does it mean? Of course! I will elaborate. The acronym YFS means Y is youth, F is Family, and S is Service. YFS has 5 programs in this department; which are Deaf Coach Services, e5 After School Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters [partnership], Deaf Youth Literacy Camp, and Family ASL Class. All 5 programs are in one department, YFS. Cool. I wonder about Jon’s experience growing up. I imagine if I was a deaf person and seeking for socialization and success at that time. And Deaf Community Services didn’t have YFS, long time ago. Wow. That means now, YFS has established as a place for young newborn babies to get exposure while growing up. This place is where we provide resources and make sure their learning process, including education, career development, and personal skills, and identify the best tools/skills for them to utilize. And they can benefit from personal growth, developing problem-solving skills, breaking down the barriers, and socialization. The socialization within the deaf community increases interpersonal connections and feeling of belonging. It’s is what YFS is for, this place is for individuals to have a sense of belonging and knowing they will have social opportunity and growth for them to thrive in the future. That also takes one internal strength from us, which is persistiveness (title of Jon's artwork). Now back to Jon’s message, we have exciting news to tell you. Let’s meet Jon at the playground. Hey, hi Jon! Let’s meet at the playground nearby and share our exciting news with the community? Yeah, are you ready? See you there!
