Although I use Studio One as my DAW, I got a TON of value from this! The principles and theories explained here can be applied universally, and what you said in the end was the most important. So Logic's compressors add a TON of gain by nature... It's different from other 3rd party compressors.

​@@Yhuntermusic Adding gain happens because auto-gain is on and in your case set to -12 as goal output level. Just turn it off and it will not add gain, until you manually do so by using the make-up gain (which feeds into the "distortion" section - try adding a few dB and turning on "Soft" for nice bit of saturation and loudness boost) and/or output gain (just clean volume control)🤓 Also, just in case you did not know, copying an effects chain can be done in one go with Copy/Paste Channel Strip Setting. FWIW, you're the first in 20+ years I've heard claim Logic is natively sounding a bit dark - what makes you say this? Nice tut though and great track!

@@itwontstopprods Thanks a lot! Good info on compressor. The gain doesn't really bother me. Some people see it engaged and are in SHOCK! I'm all about the SOUND. I might do things that are considered "wrong" but sounds GREAT. I actually cut out the part on copying/saving presets due to time. The original video is actually 1hr 40min! Compared to Pro Tools, Logic sounds a bit darker to me. I've used both for 12+ years as well. Thanks a lot!

This is fantastic advice, thanks for sharing. Question about the drums: about where should the level be once the plugins are applied, but before mastering? I seem to run into the issue of them being too quiet in the mix, then clipping once I master. I know there’s the “-12db” rule, but it never seems to work out that way for me.

What's up, Nate! The secret is putting a clipper on the drums! You can use the new "ChromaGlow" plugin to help with this if you're on Logic Pro 11. If not, you can use a distortion plugin just to catch the Peaks of the Transients!

So I've been learning how to mix mainly from a channel called The Band Guide. He has a "6 Step Process" to follow and it kind of confused me that you went against what he was saying and started doing affects, using your faders, etc all as you went rather than in individual steps. His 6 steps are: getting a static mix, processing your master track a bit with a smiley face curve, doing EQ, compression, reverb and delay, and then automation.
