Root Notes, Octaves, 5ths and Scales. That’s my way to do Basslines. Everything after that is rhythm. Once my drums and chords are laid I usually do Basslines and then leads and ear candy.

Can you explain a little more of this method or point me to a link

@@BigHomieFilms Yaahn just explained it. He showed you root notes, he showed you octaves, he showed you 5ths. Learn scales. If your key is C major or A minor then all the white keys are potential bass notes. Rhythm is in you. After the drums are laid. Then feel the groove and play the bass notes rhythmically.

As a bassist, I start most of my production with the bass line. When you learn how to lock in with drummer/kick…. 😩. Bass is the foundation of what every other instrument sits on. Now when it come to chill hop vibes …man….it’s so much you can do with a bass line, especially coming from a church background 😅 IYKYK

@@jjbing3 yessir, sometimes. Playing Bass all the time, I usually come up with bass lines and then build drums around(making sure the kick and bass are 🔐). I also come up with melodies, chords progression, etc using my bass. I just transfer melodies, chords, and other ideas over to the keys and other instruments in my arrangement 🎸🎻 🎷 🎺. People have no idea how important Bass is in music. They think 808 is all it is to it, but it’s much more bigger than that.

Keep it relatively simple at first and don't try to overburden yourself. Once you start from that point it may start to become easier. I have trouble with basslines but sometimes just cheat and play around with octave basslines with some extra stuff thrown in.

Nice and clear breakdown. Really good presentation. Do you have a church/gospel background? You must haha. I play a lot of jazz/gospel/r&b and that's been my main foundation. I started studying Bach/Chopin this year and one of the main things that's helped with for me is bass lines that really mesh with the voice leading and melody, just in a slightly different way than I've been accustomed to think about it. It's actually closer to a lot of the gospel movements than jazz, especially with the inversions being used for passing chords. Anyway, keep it up man you're killin it.
