Actually its Yiddish, but with a lot of Russian words in it. Like 'Zabastovke' which most yiddish speakers don't use. Given the decentralized nature of Yiddish, there is quite some variety.

My great-grandparents spoke "swedish yiddish" :P That's a dialect that no longer exists, most swedish jews just speak swedish these days, but typically yiddish speakers would borrow from wherever they were, and since the jewish population was higher in the east, Polish and Russian loanwords are common there, and would transfer with the many Russian, Polish and Ukrainian jews that migrated west.

For context, the Jewish population in Russia had a very unfavorable view of the Tsar in the years leading up to the Bolshevik Revolution, and for good reason. As WWI was winding down, there was a lot of instability in Russia mainly due to the fact that most Russian citizens were very unhappy with the imperial government. As a matter of fact, in 1905 there was a Revolution of citizens demanding political reform (which resulted in many changes, including a new constitution and the creation of a form of parliament). In any case, the populace continued to grow more and more dissatisfied and as demonstrations and protests became larger and more frequent, it was becoming evident to the Tsar that another revolt was coming soon. So, in a vain attempt to take the heat off himself, he and his secret police began carrying out anti-Jewish pogroms and suggested to the public that all the instability in the country and their failure in the war was all the cause of the Jewish population.

@@Anonymous163ful the Anti-Jewish pogroms in the Russian Empire are well documented, even being covered at the time by foreign newspapers like the New York Times, despite attempts by the Tsar to censor the media. Or are there other reasons, like the text of the song, or a political attitude that you associate with it? Maybe some kind of innuendo to current political movements, "100 years later" in regard to police violence, to government violence that supress minority groups? Is that all wrong?!

By my count, the Jews who were living in Russia had been there longer than the American revolutionaries had been in the US in 1776. I think they had a right to call for the system of government to be changed. I am not a Stalinist.......or a communist...I just resonate with the courage of people calling non-violently for change. There were millions of Yiddish nationalists who wanted to unite with people of all ethnicities and creeds in these lands and improve the conditions of living in Europe rather than colonize Palestine. "anarcho" capitalism is just as contradictory in itself as "3rd positionism" which is just fascism with red aesthetics pretending not to be fascism. In short, "an"caps don't exist as you're not an anarchist if you support hierarchical structures, power concentrated on a few powerful people, be it a state suppressing subjects, or a capitalist exploiting their workers, and let's not forget that a stateless society wouldn't have private property rights enforced by the state, something capitalists need unless they want to create their own state and military to protect their property from people taking control of their own workplaces.

So at the end of the day an "anarcho" capitalist society would just mean the most powerful, richest corporations would pool their resources together to try and create a state, a pure corporation controlled and created Plutocracy/corporatocracy. And if they didn't manage to do that capitalism likely would seize to exist as it cannot work without private property and therefore all workplaces losing any reason not to organize and take control of their workplace, and let's forget all the empty houses that outnumber homeless people by 10 to 1, or all the landlords, who would the landlord call when their tenant doesn't pay them to continue to be housed in a society without private property rights lmao, nobody.

The only thing yiddish is the language. The main message of the song goes beyond being yiddish or jew. Thats what makes it beautifull.
@slimlitvak
@slimlitvak 2 жыл бұрын
But the very fact that it is in Yiddish makes it Jewish as well - along with all the other things the song represents. Saying ‘the only thing Yiddish is the language’ is like saying ‘the only thing Romani about a song/poem/cultural artifact is the fact that it’s in Rromanes’ - in this case we can’t divorce the language or mode of expression from the culture/ethnicity, its history and political significance. To do so is to deny people’s identity, especially that of a marginalized or stateless ethnicity. As if we were to insist on calling African-Americans ‘just Americans’ without acknowledging a particular history, experience and culture (including language). The point is that we can all have more than one identity or marker thereof. For example, I’m Russian-Jewish, American, a male, from the Western US, a native Yiddish speaker, live in Europe, etc. Regarding this song in particular: a great many of the Jewish proletarian movements in the Russian Empire and elsewhere in Eastern Europe prior to WWII were explicitly both Jewish-identified and internationalist. That’s not a contradiction: it’s affirming one’s own identity while acknowledging the identities of others and saying we should all be striving together towards a better world for all.

Dude, anarchists -are- socialists, just socialists against the state. And by the way, have you even read Marx? His early works he talks about the same goals as anarchism; i.e. "withering away of the state". There is just a different method of implementing the stateless, classless society, but it is the same vision as the communists and other socialists.

@@Azoth86730 Marx was very influenced by anarchists and proto-anarchists such as Proudhon. It is Proudhon who convinced Marx that property was to be abolished and it is also him who created scientific socialism. The first international was founded largely by proudhonians (mutualists), Bakunin criticized Marx for being an authoritarian not because of his ideas but because of his behavior in the international, Bakunin always praised the ideas of Marx and translated Capital in Russian as he viewed it as the best book on capitalism ever written.
