What absolutely kills me is that Yiddish will never again be spoken by millions of people. The culture survives today, but without the language, the culture seems somewhat lost. I wish that Yiddish still thrived, but alas, it never will again. It does come up, however, and that is why I love YidLife Crisis.

I don't know what's going on in those parts of Israel, but MANY people still do speak Yiddish. even young people. I live in NY and many children speak it fluently as their first language.

+Shunamith R But we want Yiddish speakers who will actually go out into the world. Yiddish speakers in New York will just stay in Kiryas Joel or New Square.

Some do, but not all. Many work in the city and in other places that are "out into the world". Only extreme extremists stay secluded.

Jamie and Eli: I'm an American Jew who lived in Israel as an Israeli from 1985-1994. Israelis use "davka" every other word, whereas very, very, VERY few American Jews have heard of it. On the other hand, American Jews use "schlepp" every other word and NO Israelis knew of it, the the best of my knowledge. The funniest thing is to hear the Arab Muslim junk collector on his horse-drawn cart yelling "alte zachen" for people to bring their junk to him!!

junbh2 I can understand Yiddish, but not really speak it, so I’m taking a Yiddish class. At 31, I’m the youngest by a good 30 years except for the teacher.

I think you might find more Yiddish speakers in Jerusalem.

So why is Yiddish being allowed to die? I ask as an outsider... With plain curiosity. Why is it considered old people's language, I mean other than the fact that the older generation speaks it... Is it sexist, racist or otherwise politically incorrect?
@Eytan_Mirsky

For various reasons. It was obscured by modern Hebrew. Yiddish was the language of only Ashkenazi Jews and could not unify all the various Jews in the State of Israel. (However, despite what was shown here, many ultra-Orthodox Jews do still speak Yiddish.)

Not to mention that, like America, Israel is an immigrant country. First wave speaks the language of the old country, second generation may know a few sentences, third can MAYBE say hello and goodbye. It's common with most languages. In theory, I could speak Yiddish, Romani, and Hungarian . . . but I only know English thanks to a couple generations removal from Europe. Es iz a shanda
