The quick and oblique reference to "a special" is completely lost on non-Montrealers. So, as a public service, I will explain. The "Special" is sort of Jewish panini, indigenous to Montreal, and a particular neighbourhood and institution therein. For years, Moe Wilensky cranked out Specials in the family-run corner deli ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilensky%27s ). It is a pressed sandwich on a bun, comprised of several different kinds of grilled cold-cuts - salami, bologna, and mock chicken loaf - all of it kosher. Traditionally, it comes with mustard. I haven't eaten there since Moe was The Specialist. Historically, it was always 2 cents more *without* mustard, because apparently stopping to not put on mustard disturbed Moe's concentration on the little sandwich-press assembly line (my last Special was 65 cents, 67 cents without mustard); something you can't do since the penny disappeared. People are known to call ahead and send office staff to pick up Specials for them, and it is not uncommon to see the well-to-do eating at the same counter they ate at 60 years earlier, as youths. When my dad (who lived just down the street on St. Urbain) took me there in the early '70s, he said that there were some of the same pulp novels on the bookshelf that had been there when he was in his early 20's in the war years. I was told that when "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" was filmed there, they had to "modernize" the place to make it look historically appropriate. So much culture and history attached to a passing reference to a sandwich.
