YidLife Crisis

Күн бұрын

When Jamie Elman and Eli Batalion, Jewish Canadian comedians and creators of the award-winning Yiddish series “YidLife Crisis” (yidlifecrisis.com), travel to Poland in search of their Yiddish roots and Ashkenazi culture, they end up finding a unique Jewish community built by Poles looking to face their own complex roots. “Narishkayt” (Yiddish for “silliness”) follows the duo on tour as they bring their show to Krakow and explore the dynamic and delicate intersections of Polish and Jewish life in the past and present.
Presented by the Charles & Lynn Schusterman Foundation, Bronfman Fellows AVF and the Stevens-Kurtzig Family Fund.

I am not Jewish, however I am a Yiddishephile (??? new word ???). I grew up in a very Jewish community on Long Island and always loved those Jewish boys best. I married a Jew. These guys are near and dear to my heart. I think it's wonderful that they are keeping alive the Yiddish language and humor. My husband's mother and aunt Evelyn who both grew up in Poland would be kvelling right now. I miss YidLife Crisis. I wish they'd do some more!

You guys are great. Keep doing what you're doing! Side note, Yiddish was only the "international" Jewish language amongst Ashkenazi Jews. Middle Eastern and North African Jews never spoke Yiddish and that was one of the reasons Eliezer Ben Yehuda decided to revive Hebrew.

Don't forget about Ladino for the Sephardic Spaniards. Yiddish is a Bastard language (with Hebrew/Russian/German/etc./and now English included in the language). For some reason, there is a connection to Yiddish that keeps it alive, while the others have been pretty much abandoned... There are many more, like Zarphatic and Juhuri, that have also been lost to time.

Eli Spalter my family speaks juhuri. It’s basically Aramaic /Hebrew mixed with Farsi. Jews from Azerbaijan, Dagestan and northern Caucasus speak it. Unfortunately I only understand and can curse in this language. My parents are fluent though.

Jamie & Eli - exactly right that my Yiddish is 100% from my grandparents, and now the only way I use it is in vernacular. Fortunately my German knowledge applies *just* enough to know what you guys are talking about maybe 75%!

this was really neat, thanks for sharing it here (no recipes in the description?!) :) I'm happy to see the Orthodox guys that said they'd come, did, and I was blown away at the young lady that looked at Jaime's screen and out came instant Yiddish - wow! Hebrew is viewed, correctly, by the Orthodox in Palestine as the political, or ideological language... and it's pretty much frowned upon. And I respect Eli for stating that hard-line Israelis view the guys into religion wearing odd hats & not working on the Sabbath as week-knee'd sissies. I adore these two. Thank you.

When you said "meshuggeh" comes from Hebrew You just reminded me of a phrase from "The Periodic system" by Primo Levi (In whose city I live): polka dot fabric was called "kinim", even by gentile traders, from the Hebrew for "lice", one of the seven plagues of Egypt. so some words not only came (and stayed) in the vernacular english, but in other languages as well. Alas, that was Piedmontese which was the commonly spoken language of the region, and it didn't pass into italian.

There are Polish and Ukrainian Jews that are actually Sephardic. After being expelled from Spain they landed in Italy, then Greece, Bulgaria, Constantinople, Western Ukrainian, and southeastern Poland. They married into the majority Ashkenazi population.
