We bought a used Focus Electric which has a similar battery size, is getting us 130 miles in city driving, and was $11k with factory warranty still intact (which I extended to 8 yrs/75k miles. Not sure I see the benefit in a vehicle like this when there are used vehicles for a fraction of the price and still have the same range. The Focus also has DC fast charging, although I doubt it’s an amazing rate either.

This is good stuff thanks. I was inspired by your videos to record one going up the alps in my model 3. I had a camera outside and on on the screen. On the return I drove 40km and had 3kwh more on the battery than when I started. On the way up, it estimated I had a range of 70 km with 60%+ SoC 🤣I think I will get that edited.

Hey Kyle are you coming to the UK? Great vid as per usual. I watch vids on stuff that is only available in the US that will never reach us in the UK because it’s interesting and where the technology is. As for this car, it’s funky and great for the city BUT is way overpriced.

I don't think the target buyer for this car is a CCS user who usually uses CCS while doing long distance driving.. This car is targeted towards city dwellers who do overnight charging.

It definitely looks like it throttles the charging early on. I do wonder if that is to prevent rapid degradation of the battery.
@peterwright8373 жыл бұрын
My 2020 Chevy Bolt has been doing something similar. Whatever I have the target charge level set to the app tells me the SOC is three percentage points lower than the limit when it stops the charging. Of course GM has recommended not charging above 90% nor discharging below 70 miles of range so I’m not sure there’s much I can do about right now.
@wolfgangpreier91603 жыл бұрын
Not more then 90% is what in range? Not less then 70 miles? Thats about as much as my Fiat 500E from 2015 has max. range left. But the Fiat has no problems at all.
@peterwright8373 жыл бұрын
@@wolfgangpreier9160 EPA range is 259 so 90% would be 234, but at 70 mph actual range is 230 on a good day. So 207 is the max if you could drive it down to zero. Subtract off the 70 miles you’re not supposed to go below and your down to 137 miles of freeway range. Plus since you can’t use the bottom 30% of the battery capacity you would be charging from 30-90% which is significantly slower than charging from 0-60%. Bummer all around for road trips
@CFG393 жыл бұрын
How is the efficiency so horrendous? 35kWh pack that only gives you 80ish miles at 70MPH is only 2.5mi per kWh. That’s worse than a Model X.

Thanks for the video Kyle I have bough my first EV it's a 2015 e Golf SEL US specs and when the battery is at normal operating temp. of around 25 C (77 F) and when I charge on a 50 kw DC Charger it starts low but ramp up quickly and max out at around 42 et 43 kw to around 80 % SOC and this is with a air cooled battery my sister's 2020 e Golf doesn't seem to charge as fast it don't know why that is I think my cells are Panasonic and they might have more cobalt than the newer e Golf pack ?

That color at the rear three quarter view is appealing. I’d be interested in how you attempt to calibrate BMS besides the plug/unplug. Sounds like the kW for the car is true size not usable capacity. 🤔 I think it would take driving past zero (turtle mode) to know the full kW by finding it’s true zero. Finally Germany gets your expertise insight and EV evaluation of charging‼️ Should have figured you’d like a fun happy city EV for their strengths while keeping their achilles’ heel in perspective. I loved the car but for me, UK countryside, it was useless. The range was just too low and the charging too slow. I had it down a week and achieved no more than 80 miles, driving carefully. If they could only have put a 40kw battery in. I leased an MG ZS EV. It’s great. 170 miles is more than enough in the UK and it will hit 80Kw when charging in Summer. Much more space but nowhere near as funky.

There is no excuse for a so called "City Car" in 2021. In 2012 when batteries were $400 per kWh they were a way of putting a prototype EV on the road so that early adopters could play with them. But a car that can't even do a round trip to the suburbs comfortably makes no sense now. The problem with the city car concept is that cities are the places where you can't do overnight charging which forces you to rely on DC fast charging which you've just shown isn't very fast in the Honda. If in the future every parking meter had a plug on it they would work. However by the time that happens batteries will cost less than $50 a KWh which eliminates the reason for putting in such a small battery.
@jonpetter89213 жыл бұрын
There s no need to buy a 500 km EV if you only commute around cities. That s the opposite of sustainability.
@mamadouaziza25363 жыл бұрын
Oh please.... What damn city do you live in? In Los Angeles there are chargers right next to the parking meters and there are literally hundreds of EVgo/ChargePoint/Electrify America units throughout the city. Its not the car's fault that certain towns/cities aren't equipped with infrastructure.. Also, the Honde-e is a small lightweight car, adding more batteries would make the car too heavy.. The car is what it is and if its not for you, just don't buy it..

@@mamadouaziza2536 California is at least five years ahead of the rest of the US, maybe 10 years. By the time that on street chargers are available in any city besides LA the cost of batteries will be half of what they cost now. You don't build a car that's only usable in LA.

Its a 33kwh battery in the 2017 BMW i3.. I would not say these cars are behind because a car isn't a one size fits all product.. These cars are purposely built for European city driving where charging infrastructure is plentiful. These are not long distance cars that comfortable seat 5 people, a dog and a cat.. There must be a variety of cars to suit different needs.. Why bother with a mid size to large car with a big battery if 90% of your driving is 50 miles round trip in a day in the city? If you need more range and a faster charger, the Honda-e and the i3 aren't for you, its that simple... Go buy an e-Tron or Model Y or Mach-e...

I hate it when "city car" is used as an excuse to make an EV basically unusable outside the city. City car should just mean that it's better in the city, but you can still drive it outside the city if you want. This car is just another example of almost all Japanese automakers not being serious about EVs.

It is what it is.. Why do Americans think the entire world owes them something? This car is not intended for the North American market, yes, its a purposely city car and not all cars are one size fits all.. There are gas cars purposely marketed as city cars.. @@mamadouaziza2536 Honda has always been a joke when it comes to EVs. In 2017 they briefly had an EV version of the Honda Clarity available in the US. It had a range of 89 mi/143 km. That's barely viable even as a so-called "city car," which it wasn't. They weren't serious then, and they're not serious now. This is all about compliance vehicles to satisfy regulations without making a real attempt to satisfy customers. They don't plan any real EVs in the US for at least a couple years, and even those will be based on GM's drivetrain, not their own.

One more rant about the Honda E. Its way to nice for a car that has so little range, they not only put lipstick on a pig they put on a pearl necklace and matching ear rings. The E costs $40000, subtract the VAT and it's still $32000 the price of a Bolt EUV that had a 250 mile range before LGs incompetence killed it. If Honda was intent on building a 100 mile car they should have stripped it to it's bare bones and cut the price by $10000.
