Antenna ON ICE! Unscientific/Fun Experiment by YL Raisa on a frozen lake

Sometimes you want to go beyond the standards and try something new, right? So I decided to experiment with antenna laying right On Ice.
Friends warned me that it would not work and I would not be able to make any QSO with this dipole.
But I tried it anyway and you can see what the result is.
You will see that the half-wave dipole calculated according to the formula, laying on the ice of the lake, showed a resonance much lower in frequency, so I had to reduce it a lot before I could transmit.

I have laid antenna on snow. In 1982 I was working in the Antarctic and deployed a 20m co-linear on the snow. I had reliable communications back to Australia.

Similar "ground antennas" are sometimes used by SWL DXers, especially on medium wave frequencies because they tend to have very low noise and can work really well even in an area with a lot of QRM. But I have never seen someone using it as a TX antenna. Very interesting experiment and really great video! Thanks, Raisa! 🙂 Best 73's.

I once saw someone have a really elaborate looking Yagi antenna laying on the ground. He said he used it for Earth-Moon-Earth QSOs. I guess that operator rather proved the Moon is real, unlike what some of low intelligence seem to believe. They believe the Earth is flat and the Moon is some sort of atmospheric light reflection. If it was an atmospheric reflection, It is likely a radio wave could be relected.

Another great experiment Raisa. It's good to see you trying different things just to see how it works. I wasn't sure if it was going to work myself but being so low it would have been very low in noise. Just be careful of those bare dipole wires when you wrap them around the Balun bolts. They do tend to jump up and bite you in the fingers.

You have a good reception due to high gain of the transceiver and a low noise floor. The transmission is poor due to high signal loss because part of the signal is getting absorpted by the ice/water combo and another part is being reflected at very high angle which means it doesn't get a lot of reflection from ionosphere and too weak to be received on the other end. If you had a fishing rod, you could have secured one end of it in the ice and then get an inclined dipole or inverted V with much better performance. I hope you have had a lot fun experimenting and spending quality time in the wilderness. 73! 88!

The local volunteer fire brigade was having trouble with transmissions when they got a new antenna. I attached three more ground plane elements at a slightly steeper angle, between the existing three ground plane elements. It brought down the standing wave ratio and helped with signal reception. The home made attached ground plane elements were nothing but some electrical current jumper wires attached to the antenna ground using the clips. The other side of the clips were attached to just a nylon circle grommet I found in the firehouse. The results were surprisingly good.

Fun fact - All verticals are dipoles, but not all dipoles are vertical antennas. How, one may ask? The vertical element of the antenna is one side of the dipole. The ground is the other side of the antenna. This equals an unbalanced dipole.

Experimentation is half the fun of this hobby. As the old saying goes, “You’ll never find out if you don’t give it a try” You had an idea, put it to the test, and met your goal of making a contact. Now take that information and try to improve on your theory. Even if it becomes a total failure, you will have gained valuable information on antennas and antenna theory. Try a vertical next time, an end fed, see if that ice improves or detracts from antenna Performance. Try different heights above the ice to see if you can attain the prefect gain to takeoff angle. You never know? A 20 meter inverted V a eighth wave above the ice may be the ultimate DX antenna!

that was great video. as you have found out the math was wrong. well the math was not wrong. the numbers you came up with is for about 1/4 wave off the ground . in your case ICE which changes the loading on dipole making it shorter. I have the same icom and DX commander wire. I am in USA. eastern part. Boston NY. gets cold hear as well. now try the same on 40 and 80 meters at night even 160 meters. I did 160 meters with 1:1 balun in a park and with snow on the ground. I have the MFJ analyzer. had tuning trouble as well. too long wire. talked many KM at midnight. very low noise. a outher trick for checking SWR in IC 7300 . there is a SWR graph function. were you put into SWR mode and AM/CW enter start and stop of band. click the mic and where the water fall is will be a SWR graph. videos on youtube on how to do this with 7300. I forgot my antenna analyzer and I tuned a end fed half wave dipole this way. parks on the air. also if you get a tune around 2:1 the bult in tuner will work. some times on multi band dipole you have to do this. keep trying crazy ideas . I am almost as old as DX commander. how I learned so much. went out and tried. 73's

do you have a video of the making of your dipole box? it is the first time i see a Air-Core for making balun/unlun transformer. please help, i am very interested.

With a bit elevation (>1m) from the ice on a fine sunny daytime may generate proper radiation as the water vapor helps ionization of radiated electrons...... Try next winter.

it was funny and coldly. thank you.

I’ve always wondered about this, lol! Have you ever tried placing a dipole on saturated ground? The kind of soil that squshes when you walk on it? I had interesting results trying that with my dad years ago on 80 and 160
