Hanne M Well "afternoon" and "noon" are actually both called "middag" (mid-day) although we would also say "na-middag" (after mid-day). But some 100 years or more ago or so, we also said "noon" when meaning "noon/mid-day". But our language changed a bit over the years... Morning is are called "ochtend" or "morgen" (which is also means the next day) and evening is "avond". What does the word "middag" mean in Norwegian? Only "evening meal/dinner"? "Etter" in Dutch is the stuff that comes out of an infected would. And "for" could be the same as "voor", meaning in English: "for/before"... So it doesn't make that much sense, I would think "formiddag" would mean late in the morning...

Yes, "middag" means "dinner" only. Formiddagstid = noon time. Middagstid = dinner time. Ettermiddagstid = afternoon time.
