That guy had all his marbles, and he was right about being in better condition than a lot of younger people. Vegard was spot on at the end- on one hand, you feel bad for the guy. I cringed at his living conditions, especially the electrical cord/plug hanging right over some water. But he's happy! Loved his banter with the guys- they really are sweet and polite. 7:01 Vegard's voice, so cute!

wow-wow. so critical =| You know, I think there's some attention to be paid to what Vegard says in the closure: this man has a life that probably no one would understand but Him, He is happy with it and He is proud of it, which can be seen by Him constantly saying that He is strong and health just in a way that no young man is. And just let Him be that way is the best thing to do. He is a crazy dreamer.

I agree. One part of me becomes sad and just wants to take him from that dump and into a clean and warm flat or house, but the other half realizes that this was his life, and his dreams. The municipaly cleaned up that scrap metal yard once in 1979 and once in 1991, but it soon returned to the same state, I read in some newspaper article. According to the municipaly he was one of the largest landowners in the area, and if he had sold the farm, he would probably been able to live a pretty decent life for that money, but that wasn't what he wanted. If he had sold the farm when the house burned down and moved to a flat, he would probably died sooner and sadder, because it was his dream that kept him alive. I wish that I, when I'm 91, will be as strong, in body and spirit, as Olai Njå was, but I will probably be 6 feet under by then.

Quirentia So true. Thank you for the additional information. I feel like after the tv program aired someone from the government would come and take him from his home. My grandmother who was born in 1903 in Spain wouldn't move from her home without central heating even though her grown children wanted to move her into a new condo. She quoted "Jaula nueva, pájaro muerto" which translated means 'New cage, dead bird'. But she lived to the age of 94.

I see this kind of stuff regularly in my area. In fact, just like this. Yard full of junk, multiple trailers -all falling apart. A lot of times the original house was destroyed somehow. Or the original trailer. Never thought much of it before because it's all around…

Calm down.. If you live like this in Norway, it's because you have chosen to. And by that I mean that everyone will get a place to live and a some money if they can't afford it themself. I agree that the story is sad, and Olai is living in a kind of psychosis, but this isn't real poverty. This guy has really chosen to live under these condition, because everybody is offered welfare in terms of a home and money.

I'm glad you've never experienced being poor, but it's frustrating to hear the lucky norwegians spreading myths like these. You can ask to be placed on a waiting list for communal housing. it takes up to 6 months to process the application. If you absolutely have no other options but the street, you can be put in a shelter or camping vehicle were drug addicts and alcoholics usually makes it impossible to stay. Most likely far from the city. Often you'll have to wait for this too. Sometimes sleeping outside is the only option.

​@@spaceyeti9522 yupp I agree. I have been homeless and know alot of peoole who is. We deal with the homless same way they do in England. Often you have to sleep in the streets. It is no magical help. And if you dont do drugs, or even if you do. You dont want to sleep at the shelters

I'm rewatching this and I have to chip in my two cents: I've known many older patients, friends and relatives like this guy, men that are hoarders, or old women who have too many cats, etc, or are maybe a little demented, and living on their own in what many people would consider less than desirable conditions... but they're adults and they're happy so it's their choice. I should be so lucky when I'm that old not to be passed off into a nursing home! But what I don't understand is why there was what looked like a younger woman living in an abandoned car on his land. I have to add to the comments below at my surprise that there would be homeless people in Norway... maybe she was a runaway or domestic abuse victim or some such and was hiding out? Also RE: Bård not taking off his glove at the beginning and yawning: maybe his hand was cold and he was tired? He took it off at the end so it's fine. Regardless, even if he was having a bad day, you can forgive him for being young here. We were all young once! As always, thank you for the translation. (Human dumping ground = menneske avfall?)

We have homeless people, drug addicts, criminals. Gangs, robbers and thives. An people getting shot and stabbed every day... if you want a place without homelessness and crime. Maybe try Finland or Iceland. And ye this dude was a hoarder! And I know alot of old people who are aswell. Kinda sad!

EXACTLY my feelings. I guess since the show's supposed to be entertaining and not sad or something, they really didn't know how to react or empathize with whatever the man said in the right away so they just awkwardly giggled lol. I guess we should just ignore that and see how this man was truly "norges herligste"!

yeah, it's not like I blame their behaviour, it's a sad moment in an entertainment program, certainly a tricky situation. but they shouldn't have send it on air, escepecially not since they've shown his poverty stricken home, the lack of a bathroom and a toilet, etc. It felt very disrespectful to him.

Like, you gotta make the producers happy and do the show and keep things light and keep smiling, but it's such a sad thing to see. Both Bård and Vegard seemed like they felt awkward about it all. I feel more upset with the producers… Like you said, they shouldn't have aired it. But oh well.

There is nobody in Norway having to live like this man in the video, if they not wish to, people are helped. This old man had no lack of money, he was just an expentric person enjoying a frugal lifestyle.
