Yma Sumac in a live performance at the Ruggles cabaret theater in Chicago, on Nov. 12, 1988. As an encore, she performs a rehearsal version of her "Mambo" classic "Malambo No. 1," which she was preparing to put into her show. The tape ran out before it was over, but most of the song is there.

She was a hoot. I shuttled her back and forth to Long Beach a couple of times when a friend of mine was appearing with her in "Follies." Try as we might, we could NOT get her to sing with/to us in the car, but every now and then when the mood struck her, she'd let out with a high-pitched whoop.

She's inarguably brilliant, but I have to admit I felt bad for the backing band. Aside from the fact they looked like high schoolers she'd abducted from a suburban garage, they did a very commendable job getting the music back on track after she'd started her line too early at the beginning. She did the same thing in the final verse, but was singing it so quietly you could tell they couldn't hear where she was.
