I like how even John Oliver has made jokes about how his performance is worse than rowan atkinsons. And while I agree, that could easiely be due to direction, we know john can be entertaining, but somehow this movie has managed to fuck up everything so hard that I'd buy it right away if anyone told me they didn't give anyone proper direction. I mean they have literaly james Earl Jones back as Mufasa but this time he sounds like he didn't give a shit.

Disney has a bad habit of setting their 2D films up to fail, either purposely or incompetently. Like you said, Princess and the Frog was released around the same time as Avatar. But in 2002, they released Treasure Planet (which btw was the passion project of two of their most successful directors who directed some of their most fondly remembered movies) the same weekend as Chamber of Secrets. And then when they released their final handrawn animated film to date, that 2011 Winnie the Pooh film, that was released the same day as I believe Deathly Hallows Part Two. So Disney definitely didn’t learn their lesson by releasing their films next to two Harry Potter films, and in doing so set their films up to fail

25:41 I distinctly remember seeing an interview with Rowan Atkinson, where he mentions that he was a bit fearful of how it would go for him singing as Zazu, but that during recordings they planned when the words should land for the video cues, and helped him keep the rhythm, plus they made his part less "singy" and more "talky" to fit his strengths. Which makes sense, when you think about who Rowan is; he's a renowned comedic slapstick actor, so hitting cues is what he's brilliant at. Perhaps there are more important things to look for during casting, than the amount of followers an actor has...? Jon??!

In the behind the scenes footage its clear that they can make the Animals emote and I've seen old clips in which they do emote a little more. It's my theory that during the production of LK19, Disney's primary goal was to make sure you were aware of which celebrity was speaking at all times. A good animated movie takes you out of reality and into the world of whatever it is you're watching. In LK 94 they Cast Jeremy Irons to play Scar. They even watched his performances and animated Scar's movements to be like his but at no point during LK94 do you ever stop and go "ahahah Jeremy Irons lion". You're fully immersed in the character that is Scar. If the CGI lions are emoting properly you're going to relate to them better, you're going to get immersed. I'll bet viewers kept watching the movie instead of thinking about the cast during test screenings and Disney said "No! Make it more Celebrity!" and removing the nuance between voice and actor was the 'solution'.

This movie has pulled off an incredible feat in that it is SO BAD, that it actually makes nitpicks legitimate. Any small issues with the animation, rendering, and models are 100% valid, let me explain. If you look at any part of this shite fest, the movie was doomed from the beginning. It had terrible direction and was executed with a fittingly poor effort. Any moment, be it a gag, a story beat, or a simple transitions between scenes, has such poor writing, such poor voice acting / singing, and such poor story boarding that the movie has no value at all in terms of storytelling or directing. Even movie making in and of it self. So with that said: the only thing that could have granted ANY merit to this... Heaping... Pile... Of... TRASH? The sole reason anyone could have defended it, would have been its technical and visual feats. They do not exist.

As it has been pointed out by Adam and people here, Surf's Up, a movie released in the middle of 2007, was already utilizing VR technology to have a guy film computer animation in a way that feels like the camera of an actual documentary. Seemingly the only real difference between that and the technology used to film TLK 2019 is that TLK used HTC Vive headsets.

38:08 Not sure if Adam mentioned this, but I'm reminded of Steven Spielberg talking about how he loves working with 2D animators because *_they require a director that knows exactly what needs to be done in a particular scene from start to finish, right down to the subtleties of lighting and movement._* In other words, if the director lacks a concrete vision, it can't be fixed with all the VFX bucks papa Walt can throw at it, because 2D animation _needs_ a concrete vision in order for anything to be there at all. This extends to a shit-ton of CGI, as well - it's not the overworked VFX guys that are usually to blame, it's that the director or producer sees their finished work and realises that the instructions they gave regarding the final composition were erroneous. VFX guys, for example, absolutely *_loved_* working with Ridley Scott because they could ask him for instructions and get a literal storyboard complete with detailed instructions, because not only did Ridley Scott know what his vision for a scene was, he was initially trained as an artist before becoming a director. And Jon Favreau, unfortunately for Disney, is not Spielberg or Scott.

I still love it when the characters look like they exist on a completely different plane than the backgrounds they're put in. Like the part where Simba and Mufasa are watching the sun rise, when Simba's audio peaks it looks like he's *floating menacingly* on Pride Rock. 11/10 Disney. Your overworking and underpaying your CG artists really shines through.

I thought the Kimba video was Adam's Magnum Opus but after seeing that this project is already an hour and fifteen minutes deep and it's not even past the first twenty minutes of the film, this might be my most anticipated KZbin video in a very long time. It can be four hours long and it wouldn't matter to me. Adam always puts in the work and makes his videos highly entertaining. You never get the feeling that any research or chances to rightfully and hilariously mock the film were missed.

I cant wait for this. i dont care how long it taking.. or how long the result will be. Adum cares a lot about this , so you know the time ans effort put in is going to be top notch. so people need to be patience and let Adum do his magic.

Tbf Jon Oliver has said he's not "the best" Zazu, I think once even admitting it wasn't even good. For one, it isn't a role he particularly thrives in I think, and for another the direction for the voice work seems to have been poor in general. I find him to be funny on his own show and some on older things like a few episodes of Community, the old The Daily Show, etc. but in this he's just kinda awful.

@@michaelstrong5383 Well, at the very least reading with some amount of emphasis into it, but yeah it's not a great performance. But most of the other acting in the movie is just as bad or even worse from what I've been hearing of it (admittedly haven't watched the actual remake version, just clips and highlights). It seems like Jon Favreau (I think it's spelled) has as much knowledge/care put into the voice acting as he did in the facial animations: none.

Rowan Atkinson is a performer with a lot of acting experience. Oliver is mainly a standup comedian who's had a couple of acting gigs on the side. I assume Favreau just went "we need a high profile nerdy british guy" and landed on Oliver without thinking much about their actual professional backgrounds.

It's insane how hard the "CGI is inherently better because younger generations reject 2D animation" narrative is pushed when younger generations are obsessed with anime
