To me both are incredible musicians. I got a chance to see Yngwie perform in around '06. That performance he reached Shawn Lane speed no doubt. Maybe even faster. Even Ron Keel who was there with George Lynch said he had never heard Yngwie play as clean or fast before. That was a freak performance. Yngwie also wrote a concerto for electric guitar which is epic. I saw Shawn Lane live three times. Mind blowing performance. Its unfortunate he passed away so young. I saw him about six months before he died. Both geniuses in their own right.

Then he focused on classical things, neo classical things, style that he radicalized and devellopped fully. Nobody really played like this before him.. Also some of his early demos are very very dark and heavy for 1978-1980, quite thrashy in that regard. Megadeth took some stuff in thoses for their 3 first records. Even Heathen when they had Paul Baloff and more. Yngwie demos were tape traded in the Bay Aera before he got there in 1983. As i said Yngwie have some dramatic into his playing style of soloing, and his talent of songwriter, at least for 2 or 3 decades and heavy riffs are underrated by few people that don't listen very well.

There is a video of Shawn playing Purple Haze on the 4th of July somewhere…they end it with an unaccompanied solo that clearly shows Shawn communicating with the mothership in orbit around some other planet… His was a once in a lifetime talent, and based on what may others have said about him and his habits and abilities, it is fairly obvious that Shawn was a bonafide genius. Oh, and he played piano as well (if not better) than he played guitar.

It’s a cool comparison. YJM= harmonic minor, Phrygian dominant, diminished arpeggios etc. drawing on mostly baroque era influences. Shawn lane= a lot of whole tone scales, W/H and H/W diminished and string skipping, lots of jazz influence. I’ve definitely listened to Yngwies first three albums the most..
