I didn’t know this existed. Excellent recoding for the medium. Incredible intensity from a young Yo-Yo. Superstar conductor-composer. The work is only 30 years old at this time. Important document.

Congratulations on your "deeper understanding". Such endearing haughtiness. Gabetta's tempo in the 1st mvmt is indeed slower than i would prefer but to my ear doesnt lack intensity because of it. As for points where the piece begs for vibrato i would have to comb through it again with prejudice. My favorite recording was Heinrich Schiff with Maxim conducting. (p.s. I too have performed this concerto)

I once jokingly commented on Lynn Harrell's rather slapdash tempo of the Elgar 1st mvt. Got a response from someone that sparked my cheeky answer "Well perhaps he had a plane to catch". That same someone replied "No, no plane, just elgar's marked tempo. When I discovered this ,I also felt it was much too fast but that was MY instinct not the music's, I had to get used to it" The comment was signed "Lynn Harrell"! (I still disagree with his tempo though :)

It is not at all uncommon for performers to use sparse vibrato or forgo it completely when playing 20th century music such as Shostakovich. Sol Gabetta's tone is intense, focused, and markedly unromantic. As i posted on her performance, "Presented with the cold, unadorned austerity that would have warmed Dmitri's heart."

sol gabetta has a complete different approach, you CANNOT and shouldn't compare different master cellists to one another, she just has a different interpretation that some might like or not.

Disagree. You have to havr anxiety to get this. Its scary, heavy, frantic. It is entering into the gates of hell that was the mind of Dimitri Shostakovich. As someone with anxiety, the mind during an attack isnt at a relaxed tempo. No. It is soaring fast. I love the quick tempo.

@@nickdavis965 Not only that, but Yo-Yo actually plays the first and fourth movement, as well as the end of the cadenza at the indicated tempos. Those being: Half Note = 116(first mov), Quarter Note = 144, 160,(end of cadenza), and Half Note = 88(fourth mov)
