I actually cried when I first heard this song. Because of some family issues I'm not getting into, I always had to take care of my younger siblings, which forced me to grow up real quick. I had never heard anyone actually talk about how difficult it is to deal with responsibilities like this, wanting to help everyone and keep them safe, even though you can barely handle it either. So yeah, this song definitely means a lot to me and I love Luisa's character anyway. She isn't just "the strong one", she's sweet and caring, which I just gotta appreciate.

Surface Pressure is arguably the song most people can relate to in some way. I'm an only child myself, but my mom was a single mother that was sick basically my whole life. It forced me to grow up before I was really ready to and left me in this vast emptiness after she passed away. On one hand, I'm grateful that some of the pressure has gone away but on the other hand I'm now being made aware that I never really had a childhood like others because I was tending to my mother. Wouldn't change anything about my life though, no matter how many times it nearly made me break because it also gave me the ability to be empathetic towards others.

I love the metaphors and symbolism in this song, like how the “light wind” is a literal tornado. I’m the youngest between me and my sister, but the words “your sister’s older, give her all the heavy things we can’t shoulder” still greatly resonates with me. In my mind, it’s also referring to how when you’re young, the world’s so innocent and good, but then when you’re older, that view changes as burdens and stresses builds up on you.

It's so funny hearing your white, Midwestern self trying to pronounce Spanish words! I'm from the Southwest, which is much closer to the border, and even though I don't speak Spanish I understand the basic phonics. The letter "a" in Spanish is pronounced "ah" as in "water," so it's "En-cahn-to," not "En-can-to" like a can of soup. Madrigal is also pronounced more like "Mahd-ree-GAHL," with the emphasis on the last syllable and a little bit of a flip before the "r."

Okay, so yes Madrigal is the name of the family that the movie is about. After this I HIGHLY recommend you either watch the songs in order or watch the whole movie. Song order: “The Family Madrigal” “Waiting on A Miracle” “Surface Pressure” “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” “What Else Can I Do” “Dos Oruguitas” “All Of You” I know you mainly go for radio songs but the soundtrack for Encanto is incredible. This hits pretty hard, but perhaps in a somewhat different way. I am an oldest sibling, but I really could not handle taking over burdens. Because of my kid's diagnoses, I've come to realize I have ADHD and most likely Autism that was never diagnosed as a kid. Coupled with that, my parents were teens when they had me. They weren't ready. They weren't good at teaching or explaining expectations. So I think I was supposed to take on burdens, but I had no idea what they were or how to do the things I should have done. I've always felt like a disappointment but no real idea of what I did wrong in a specific sense.

What’s crazy about this song is Luisa isn’t the oldest child, she’s the middle child. But this song tends to resonate more with people who are the oldest in the family. They tend to get the most pressure on them from the family (not always, sometimes younger siblings get more pressure to be more like their older siblings) I personally like this song a lot more then we don’t talk about Bruno I find it plays in my head a lot more often even months after watching the movie

Older sister of 5, but growing up it was just me and my 2 younger brothers. I was expected to do way more than they did and the stakes for messing up was higher. Now that we’re older and two of us have left the house, my brother who was the youngest became the middle child and is significantly older than the other two. He might understand some of the struggle, but the stakes aren’t the same for him as it was me. Older siblings are like the practice kids for parents to see what does and doesn’t work and they become less strict with each new child. By the way, I’m a new subscriber. Looking forward to watching your content.
@Glorigon2 жыл бұрын
Good reaction. On surface level, it could be seen as simply the pressure that comes from being an older sibling, but it goes much deeper in context of the story. To me, the song is more about the pressures of the identity and what happens when you lose that identity. If you can do everything, but suddenly find yourself unable to do what you could, it would jar a bit of the psyche creating a different version of pressure. It is like seeing your entire world crumble around you, knowing you can't do anything to stop it. All the songs in this film is great and so full of nuance.

This is my favorite song from the movie, both with and without context. We Don't Talk About Bruno is awesome, and the weaving of the verses into the finale is brilliant, but this one - it's relatable, it's catchy, and Jessica Darrow absolutely nails the performance while staying in character. She also has a few other versions you can check out; there's a jazz cover and one with Punk Rock Factory that I know of, both are worth a listen.

She is always called on throughout the scenes before this to move or break or lift things. The scenes right before this had Mirabel chasing her down asking her what's wrong with the magic or what she knows and someone casually says "Hey, Luisa, can you reroute the river?" And she replies "On it!" She has infinite strength as her gift... but inside she feels weak under the pressure. The pressure is "under the surface" that can lift everything.
@Collidedatoms2 жыл бұрын
Oh, and in terms of missing context, she's back at the beginning afterward standing on that path with her fists clenched hyperventilating. Mirabel gives her a hug and says "I think you're carrying way too much". She hugs her back and says "maybe I do overdo it. Last night when you saw the cracks, I felt... weak!"

I think out of any of the remaining Encanto songs that you could try evaluating for the radio, the best one to check out would be What Else Can I Do. I'll put context under the read more if you don't wanna be spoiled. What Else Can I Do sounds the most like a typical modern pop song about being yourself, and within the story it centres around a character who has a flower motif who, at this point in the story, just discovered she can literally do more than what she's been told to do all her life. If Surface Pressure is about a character feeling trapped, What Else Can I Do is about a character breaking free.

Ok I'm sure someone probably already did this, but here's the tea - Luisa is the middle sister of three, Little mIss Perfect being the oldest, the girl you see in the video with her being the youngest. Each has a magical gift (except for the youngest, but that's another story) and Luisa was gifted with super strength. She is constantly called upon to serve - the communtiy, her family, her friends - and no one seems to consider that maybe Luisa needs some self-care time. She is exhausted, over drawn, yet feels she cannnot say no. Her family pushed her to be ever more available to help others, never taking her feelings into account. Mirabel (the youngest sister) is the first to ask her if she's ok. And so she downloads everything, telling Mirabel exactly what she is going through.
