Not only 'Story of Tonight' (which you mentioned, and I had never noticed), but also Washington's suggestion, "Let's take a break tonight" hearkening back to the same advice from the Schuyler sisters. You paused right on Hamilton's dumbfounded "No-- Sir, _why?"_ [4:00] [4:09] Thinking back to Nonstop... Could this be the one and only time in all his life that Alexander had to be *urged* to write? [13:35] -- actually, at the time of filming, Chris Jackson was in his last performances before stepping down from the role! I suspect that added extra emotional "punch' to the song for him- above and beyond the emotional intensity already inherent in the song itself.

This song - this ridiculously powerful, emotional song - is not only Washington's farewell, but also Chris Jackson swan song moment, & he brings it all. You were actually right the first time! Hamilton was writing Washington’s speech, not talking about himself. @vaxstiel2 жыл бұрын
Also, a lot of the lyrics are direct quotes from his resignation speech. Lin did a great job setting them music, but it also it showed how lyrical Hamilton was as a writer. (As it is generally assumed that Hamilton wrote this speech for Washington.)

If I recall correctly, I don't think he ever actually performed this speech. Washington's farewell address was a letter that was published in a newspaper.
@IONATVS2 жыл бұрын
@@vaxstiel Yeah, considering how much writing Hamilton did on Washington’s behalf most scholars agree he at least wrote the drafts, even if Washington gave it a final editing pass before delivering/publishing it, and may well have completely ghostwritten it. It has a lot of the trademarks of the style Hamilton used when openly writing on Washington’s behalf elsewhere, but Hamilton was a SKILLED ghostwriter, so his stylistic cues likely came directly from the quirks of speech of the man whose narrative voice he was trying to capture, so it is always going to be hard to tell.
@missdancefan2 жыл бұрын
@@vaxstiel Eliza fought to have Hamilton acknowledged as a writer of the speech (actually it's an Address to the nation since it wasn't a delivered piece) and she got her wish. And Hamilton did write a huge chunk of it. Though Washington originally had Madison write a small first draft when he was undecided about running for reelection the first time. (He bypassed Ham & Jefferson because the infighting the two had going). By the end of Washington's second term he was estranged with Madison. Washington made sure some of that draft was still included for political reasons (so Madison & Jefferson wouldn't go at the speech). Also John Jay did a proof reading with suggestions. So it's really the whole Federalist team coming together one last time. But Washington wrote out the final speech and deep down the values and ideas within The Farewell Address belong to Washington more so than Hamilton, Madison or Jay.

“Pick up a pen. Start writing!” This is the FIRST time in the musical where Hamilton has been short of words. He doesn’t want Washington, who has turned into his father figure, to step down. Washington literally tells Hamilton to start writing, and Hamilton makes up excuses NOT to write, which is the exact opposite of Non-Stop. Hamilton has been shocked into silence for the first and last time. Also, the background music that you said was kind of funky and cool is the same very very subtle background music of Right Hand Man. It hints from the very beginning about this song! LMM is a GENIUS!

It wasn't law that Presidents could only serve two terms until the 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951 after FDR died in his fourth term. However... Washington sets a precedent by stepping down after two terms... which most following presidents honored.
@IONATVS2 жыл бұрын
The 22nd amendment is unusual, however, in that it was part of Madison’s original draft of the Bill of Rights, and unlike most post-Bill-of-Rights amendment proposals had no sunset clause saying it had to be passed by a certain time, so after FDR bucked the *tradition* of *willingly* sticking to 2 terms established by Washington, they only needed to “finish” passing and ratifying an amendment that was already technically on the table and partially through the approval process from the very first session of congress to make it the law of the land. It was likely part of the inspiration for why Washington specifically chose two terms: it showed good faith with his harshest critics that he was a Cincinnatus, not a Caesar by voluntarily following the very constraints they wanted to put on his power

This song represents one of Alexander Hamilton's greatest triumphs - at least partial authorship of one of America's greatest political speeches, Washington's Farewell Address. All of his spoken words while he was holding the quill were the written words of the speech, and LMM used a motif from Obama's administration where will.i.am did the spoken-word blending with President Obama's words. This song also heralds the effective end of Hamilton's political career (and he knew it - you noted his reluctance to accept that GW was stepping down). Washington was his bulwark and buffer from the rest of the political establishment and the (mf'ing) Democratic-Republicans in particular. Once GW was safely returned to Mount Vernon, the long knives came out for AH, as you will soon see. Buckle in, the seas are about to get choppy.

I always thought the phrase “George Washington’s going home” as well as the pure emotion of this song from that point has a double meaning in the context of this play . Because, you see, Washington only lived about two years after retirement and the timeline of this play kind of goes a a little bit fast .. so I think this song is literally meant to talk about George Washington retiring and also about his passing.. Using one song to cover both milestones in the story which explains the level of emotion by everybody.

Madison wrote a first draft of this speech during Washington's first term, as Washington contemplated stepping down at the end of the 4 years. But Hamilton and Jefferson teamed up to convince Washington serve a 2nd term. (Despite their political disputes, at this time both were afraid the Nation splinter if Washington stepped down after his first term. When Washington decided 2 terms were it for him, he asked Hamilton to rewrite the address. Historians believe the final draft held more of Hamilton's writing style and sentiments and less of Madison's original draft. However, after Hamilton's death, the Democratic-Republicans made it their mission to erase Hamilton's legacy from...well...as much as possible. And this speech is one example where Eliza had to fight for Hamilton to get any credit for his contributions. She (and their son, Alexander, I believe?) had to bring forth drafts that they had in their possession to prove to Congress that most of the speech were Hamilton's words. So in the song, the parts that Hamilton is speaking represent a section of the speech that he wrote (that I assume Lin felt were particularly poignant and apropos for his characterizations of both Hamilton and Washington). Then Washington joins in, as a crowd appears around him, to indicate he is "giving" his Farewell Address. It also alludes to Washington's death, which occurred within years of his resignation. Personally, I think this is one of the most impressive songs in the whole show. Using this device for the Farewell address was both incredibly moving and effective in conveying the importance of this moment in US politics.

Wow I never knew they actually hated him that much! It seems like the partisanship/division between the parties was almost as bad way back then as it is today. Which is sad considering Washington warned against exactly that

@@kasam6793 Well...I'm not sure if they were only targeting Hamilton per se. I believe that, during the many, many years that the Democratic-Republicans were in power, they downplayed the contributions of many of the Federalists (except for maybe Washington) to the early development of the Nation.

The lyrics are taken from Washington’s farewell address. Toward the end of his first term, Washington actually thought of stepping down and asked Madison to write a farewell address, but then decided on a second term. Hamilton built on what Madison had started for this farewell address - and greatly improved it. Ron Chernov’s biography of Hamilton is well worth the read btw. It is what inspired LMM and it tells you so much more. It’s also fun to discover the few points of historical inaccuracy- most were because they needed to condense things. Also interesting tidbit is Washington’s very last letter was to Alexander Hamilton. I don’t think they were friends, but Washington greatly respected Hamilton’s abilities. It is true that Washington elevated Hamilton, but equally true that Hamilton was at least a footnote in all Washington’s success.

Those are legitimate lines from George Washington's Farewell Address, you can look it up. Its basically the last paragraph of the entire speech. The whole thing is like 32 pages long. "Though in reviewing the incidents of my administration I am unconscious of intentional error, I am nevertheless too sensible of my defects not to think it probable that I may have committed many errors. Whatever they may be, I fervently beseech the Almighty to avert or mitigate the evils to which they may tend. I shall also carry with me the hope that my country will never cease to view them with indulgence and that, after forty-five years of my life dedicated to its service with an upright zeal, the faults of incompetent abilities will be consigned to oblivion, as myself must soon be to the mansions of rest. Relying on its kindness in this as in other things, and actuated by that fervent love towards it which is so natural to a man who views in it the native soil of himself and his progenitors for several generations, I anticipate with pleasing expectation that retreat, in which I promise myself to realize without alloy the sweet enjoyment of partaking in the midst of my fellow citizens the benign influence of good laws under a free government-the ever favorite object of my heart, and the happy reward, as I trust, of our mutual cares, labors and dangers." The staging gives an emotional punch. Especially how they show Hamilton writing the speech with reservation about Washington’s departure, but as he steps back the real life speech is fully turned into song. It really is a testament to Hamilton that the great George Washington had enough trust in him that he had Hamilton at his side for so long, and even worked with Hamilton to write Washington's farewell speech. Washington knew what he wanted to say, and had the wisdom to have really good ideas about what the people needed to hear, but he knew Hamilton had the eloquence and skill to write the speech in a way that would get the ideas across perfectly. Hence the part in this song where Hamilton starts in the front, reciting the speech, then as he walks backwards, Washington walks forwards and continues the speech with Hamilton in the background. Beautifully done.

And yeah, that bit in the middle of the song are the actual words of Washington's farewell speech. One line that they didn't put in the musical (the speech was really long in actuality, so I don't blame them for cutting it down) which I really love and which is *extremely* salient to the situation we're living in today is this: "Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism." Also, you are correct that this was after 8 years in office (1789 - 1797), though don't misunderstand it. There were no term limits set in the law yet. Washington *chose* not to run again because he felt 8 years was long enough. Washington gave himself his own term limit. They weren't made legally official until 1947 in the 22nd Amendment, after FDR ended up being elected as President for FOUR terms and government decided that maybe that's a bad idea to keep going. They were lucky that FDR was a good one, but it could have very well ended up that a bad one could end up in that place and you'd be stuck with them for way too long.

There's an extra bit of sadness in my mind at this point in the play. Washington was the biggest father figure Hamilton had since his real father walked out on him and his mother. They butted heads a few times and sometimes had full-on falling outs, but in the end, Washington was the rock that stabilized a lot of the people in the government at the time, especially Hamilton. When he stepped down and then died only two years later, Hamilton was left adrift without the ability to rely on Washington's wisdom. Alex was a brilliant man, but he was not wise.

Yes, please do as much Hamilton as possible!!!

As many mentioned it Hamilton’s spoken part is from Washington’s Farewell Address which Hamilton probably helped write. To me those first spoken lines aren’t so much a humble brag, but more a humble apology saying essentially that if he did anything wrong during his administration it was unintentional. He also hopes future generations don’t think badly of him for any errors he might have made. Also yes pls more Hamilton content!! The Polka is hilarious, and some of the deleted songs are really good!

When Hamilton is holding the quill, he is speaking the words he is writing for Washington’s speech, and even as Washington comes to the forefront and speaks the words himself, Hamilton continues to quietly speak many of them simultaneously. Some of the language (including the quote you first thought a humble brag) is directly taken from George Washington’s farewell letter to the citizenry. The whole letter is here: www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GPO-CDOC-106sdoc21/pdf/GPO-CDOC-106sdoc21.pdf

Re: Jefferson stepping down: If you watch at the end of "Washington On Your Side", after Jefferson says, "I have to resign", he is handed a pen and paper, writes something and as Madison and Burr move to exit, Washington enters, Jefferson hands him the paper he just wrote and exits with Madison and Burr as Washington begins reading it.... Re: Hamilton Polka --- a must "hear" especially if you are a Weird Al fan! Listen to the official one but also check out when Lin and Jimmy Fallon (two huge Weird Al fans) listen to it together for the first time. Their utter glee is priceless!

One Last Time (44 Remix) done by Christopher Jackson, Barak Obama, and Bebe Winans! Truly a sucker punch for all the emotions! Hearing the original was one thing, but hearing it as the 44 remix was astounding in a different kind of real modern way knowing the historical event 44 simply being President was.

It is almost mandatory that after you finish the show you go back and listen to First Burn and Congratulations. Then you can dive into the Polka and Mix Tape and everything else. But definitely start with those two first.

Also note that the last time he said History Has Its Eyes On You he was pointing to the audience. The people. A statement saying this country is now in your hands.

At 8:28, this is Washington's actual farewell speech. Hamilton wrote it for Washington which is why Lin starts it and fades out as Chris takes over. The cast of Hamilton performed this at the White House near the end of Obama's second term - it gets emotional.

It was Hamilton quoting Washington’s final speech as the president before he stepped aside ultimately giving us the country we know today and too often take for granted.

Yes all the extra Hamilton stuff is great, it really gives more context into things briefly mentioned in the play that they had to cut. Also seeing the cast perform this song at the White House for Obama’s going away tour is magnificent. Seeing an actual President watching this as he was literally stepping down had everyone in tears, except for Obama because it is as you say he was so ready to step away but everyone else wasn’t ready to see him go. 🥹

I saw Chris Jackson say (I think on. PBS special) that because Washington was a slaver, Jackson struggled to reconcile Washington's evils with his contributions and reputation. He did "commit many errors" and his country has certainly"viewed them with indulgence."

I love George Washington. Historically, I would argue he is one of the truly greatest men to have ever lived. Even then, the absolute best thing he EVER did was to step down. The people absolutely adored him. Hamilton is right, he could have kept going, but he knew how important this was and held to the principles America was founded on.
