Anakin turned to the dark side because he became selfish in his desperation when the odds were always stacked against the well-being of him and his loved ones whenever he tried to do the right thing, or reach out for help, anyway. Yes, he was selfish and made inexcusable choices in his anger and fear of abandonment, and he deserved punishment for them. However, the tragedy of his story was that this fall easily could have and should have been prevented by the adults who raised him on the Council being more vigilant and taking corrective actions much earlier. As for Anakin, the biggest problem was that be kept trying to back two broken cult systems, rather than listening to his own heart, and doing what he knew was right, regardless of what the Jedi and Sith told him, because he had never been taught how to have self-confidence and stability in his own moral compass or gotten encouraged that it was okay to have his own personal feelings, morals, and opinions, unllike Luke. If Luke hadn’t had that happy, healthy, and normal childhood, and he’d had to deal with the prequel era cult Jedi, he probably would have been just as susceptible to turning to the dark side as his father, considering just how deeply he values close attachments, family, and friends. Even when Anakin says that “Join me on the dark side and together we can overthrow the Emperor and rule the galaxy together as father and son/husband and wife” line to Luke and Padme, he’s still backing up a fucked up philosophy that someone else taught him to try and convince himself that it’s right, rather than searching his own heart. Yes, he is kind of raving madly about taking over the world, but it’s also because, at least in the original canon, he cannot easily kill Sidious himself without getting caught and wants to break free of his abuser. In spite of being a Sith and using the power in some pretty recklessly ugly ways when he gets mad, due to anger management problems and fear of abandonment, I’m really not convinced that Anakin/Vader would be a dictator who would want to rule the universe with Padme or Luke by his side just to be a chaotic evil dictator who commits mass murder of innocents and blows up planets for shits and giggles like Sidious. He only did that stuff to serve Sidious as his apprentice. However, I think Vader/Anakin would mostly be the type of ruler who would flex his power to scare off anyone from messing with him and the ones he loved, recklessly in moments of anger, fear of abandonment, and a desire to keep him and his loved ones from ever being enslaved or killed ever again. He would never be okay again if he didn’t turn back to the light again because the Sith is just evil, but I definitely don’t think he’d really be the Sidious type dictator either. That being said, yeah, the reason why the Jedi system was destined to fail in the prequel era, with or without Anakin, was because Yoda was a weird little green troll who implemented some pretty fucked up beliefs and practices in the order that emotionally/psychologically damaged and traumatized Anakin and every other child they took under their care in one way or another.
