It always annoyed me how right Zylus thought he was when he gets hit by Lewis. On both pieces of footage you can see him get run into. And yet Zylus is just like, "nah, it's totally legit" I completely understand the Lewis salt in that clip.

21:23 Tom and Simon got a first-hand glimpse at the inaccuracy of floating-point numbers. Basically, floating-point numbers cannot represent every possible value. Certain higher values cannot be represented, commonly leading to rendering and physics not working precisely at a great distance from the world center. Most designers anticipate this kind of error and set boundaries that are more meant more for themselves than the players but would normally prevent players from ever noticing that kind of thing. These kinds of floating-point inaccuracy errors appear everywhere, especially in large worlds and indy games. Most developers get around this by moving the world around the player and not the other way around. They also restrict the distance at which entities make use of floating-point operations. An example of this could be Minecraft. In this game, every chunk acts as its own world center for specific purposes.

That last paragraph is not entirely accurate. Minecraft does not do that. It uses 64-bit values (aka "doubles") so it has very high accuracy, but eventually you will start to get issues where it starts loosing bits at the small end of the number so it can have more for the large end. This is fairly easy to avoid, but usually not needed. Moving the world around the camera or the camera around the world is mathematically the same thing (you just negate the translation parts of the view matrix for the latter) and will have the same issues unless you break the world into separate chunks that don't use a global coordinate systems like they do in Minecraft.

Flying into the air seems to be a common problem. Can a programmer explain why this happens?
@Erhannis
@Erhannis 4 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about when suddenly one or more objects will freak out and explode off in random directions (including up)? I can explain my understanding of some of the causes of such things: basically, imagine you're pushing on a trampoline. The farther into it you press, the harder it pushes back. In games, a similar mechanism is often used - the harder you push on something, the harder it pushes back. However, games update in discrete units of time. Your foot is moving towards the floor. It's 25mm away. It's 15mm away. It's 5mm away. It's -5mm - wait, we went too far. Apply a force upwards, and the foot moves back up a bit. If the object is particularly inflexible, or if the object was moving quickly, or in particular, if something gets wedged in a position where it's stuck between two immovable surfaces, the forces applied can be vastly stronger than they'd be in real life: in real life, the foot would have been stopped sooner, or something else would give. But games can only update so quickly, and better calculations are more complicated, and the decisions about what things can bend are based in part on design decisions or efficiency reasons or whatever, rather than strict physical realism, and in such situations, where an immovable object meets an unstoppable force, the result is that the numbers get super crazy until the problem goes away.

@@Erhannis no i'm talking about all the times they just start levitating up in the air. Like Sips does several times.
@Erhannis
@Erhannis 4 жыл бұрын
@@TykusBalrog One possible explanation is that two objects can get stuck on each other, and the game's physics don't balance out to zero like they ought. For instance, imagine pulling upwards on your shoelaces. All the forces cancel out in your skeleton etc. so that you don't go anywhere. If there are imperfections in the calculations, though - perhaps due to rounding errors, or maybe a more algorithmic error, like the engine updates values in-place rather than using a buffer, sort-of as though your physics were using a rolling shutter - then the forces may not cancel right, and you end up with a net force in one direction. Another potential explanation is that with two overlapping objects, the game decides that both objects are on each other, and so each frame it goes "ah, X is slightly too low, it should sit ON TOP of Y; lemme move that up a bit. Now lemme look at Y. Oh, Y is slightly too low; it should sit ON TOP of X, lemme move that up a bit." And both X and Y ascend to the heavens. Note that I've not made an extensive study of the subject; these are my speculations cobbled together from my general programming knowledge, tidbits of game-physics lore, and my experience writing simple physics simulators.
