The tiny plane was an ME-163 Komet rocket plane, It is indeed a German plane from WWII, the fastest aircraft of the war by a good margin. It has the dubious distinction of killing more pilots in accidents than enemies in combat. This has to do with the fuel and oxidizer, not only were quite toxic, but the oxidizer had a bad way of *melting the pilot* if it got on them, and being a hypergolic rocket, the fuel and the oxidizer would ignite on contact, meaning very bad things would happen from a single bullet hole through both tanks. The engine also had a habit of exploding from time to time, and a rough landing could also make the plane explode. This wasn't helped by the fact that it dropped its wheels upon takeoff (which were known to sometimes bounce back up and hit the airplane, causing fiery death as well), and landed on a skid. Also, since it was a rocket plane that only had 8 minutes of fuel, they would fly it up to altitude, make a few passes on enemy bombers, then glide back to base once they were out of fuel. This only gave them one chance of landing, on a skid in a grassy field in a high speed glider. A rough landing could damage seals on the fuel and oxidizer tanks, causing exciting things like the pilot getting soaked with the high test hydrogen peroxide oxidizer and having their face literally melt, as well as both fuel and oxidizer seals springing leaks, causing a big bang when the leaked chemicals met each other. Also, due to the seat design, rough landings could break the pilot's back. Remember that even though the plane is out of fuel, there's a bit of it left over sloshing around in the tanks, just like when your car runs out of gas. It's enough for bad things. All in all, the plane was a flying deathtrap. No one has ever built a rocket powered fighter since. For good reason. The story about the rocket launchers is also true, although they were actually mortars. Only a couple of the aircraft were fitted with them. Most of them used ordinary cannons, though of a quite large 30mm caliber.

Aww you beat me to it, i was re-watching old yogs videos I'd missed and hearing Ben mention this, as an aviation nerd I rushed to the comments section, even though I doubt anyone will ever look down here now the video is so old! The upward-firing rifles actually ejected downwards when they fired so the Komet suffered (in theory) zero recoil, though iirc it was only used once in combat; what Ben said about the light sensor is true, cool stuff! What fascinates me about the whole period (ignoring the horrible war and death stuff) was the fact that pilots were managing 600+ mph... considering only 40 years earlier flight had never been achieved by man, and 20 years later man exits the atmosphere... blows my mind every time.

btw, its a ME-163 which used twin 30mm which was an interceper aka, a rocket powered jet that you have an 50/50 chance of taking off or blowing up and that it is an glider which you have to use the engine sparing its a damn fucking rocket which lasted like 5/7 minutes MAX before you have to glide home

The slower you go, the more maneuverability you have. Part of your guys problem is you're hold down the throttle. Hold the throttle when going straight, or when trying to gain speed, however, when you pass an enemy or one is behind you, hold the air brake and you will turn faster than them (if they are holding the throttle) and you will be able to get behind them.

15:43 No, what Ben is talking about here is a variant of the schräge music. If the plane was too fast it would mean that that would be way unpractical. The plane is called the Me-163 and it was a so called "Rocket interceptor". It was extremely fast for its time but it having a solid rocket booster for an engine meant that you couldn't put of the engine or change throttle while flying. It also had only 5-8 minutes of fuel. Its landing gear was unreliable for landing as well(I guess to make it lighter) and it didn't have a lot of ammo for its giant caliber guns.

The Me 163 is what that plane was, and they had 2 30mm cannons which apparently aren't modeled in the game as they are MGs. Ben was talking about a different concept i think where they had 20mm mg 151 cannons on the roof of the fuselage pointing up where they would go under bombers and shred their bombload.

16:00 ben you're talking about the do 217 with the shrage musik weapons on the top. Bombers' weakspots were usually directly under, due to the lack of belly gunners with high gun depression. So it'd fly under and match the speed, then tear it up with weapons pointing up :p

The Komet used a skid to take off, though it did have a few small wheels for landing. These wheels were rarely used, as the volatility of the fuel would cause any amount left to explode on impact.

Those tiny planes are based on the ME 163 they were the only rocket planes to be used in battle. They had 4 minutes of fuel, and were designed to take off, and take about 3 minutes to climb above bomber formations, and rocket past with the last minute or so of fuel. however the guns fired very slowly, so pilots had to be very accurate while flying very near the speed of sound.

Ben is talking about the Jagdfaust on the ME-163. It was a vertically mounted system that fired a round at a bomber using a photo cell to trigger. Pretty crazy. I learned about it at a young age playing Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe.

Zylus' slow plane - that's an ME-163. It's a rocket plane with two massive cannons. It is incredibly fast for 18 minutes before it runs out of rocket fuel. It's was used to target massive bombing campaigns (by America, England) because it could get up to altitude so quickly (8 minutes vs. a standard BF - 109s half hour). It was mostly a Nazi scare tactic.
