It’s amazing that there just so many monsters in Japanese myth that take on the forms of a seductive young woman, I mean you find them in other types of myths around the world (Deer women from Native Americans for example) but Japan has them in just such a abundance.

There once was a blacksmith, who lived in the forest. Her face was always covered by a mask when she interacted with patrons. her arms covered by the heavy sleeves of a leather kimono. No one ever saw her working but her wares were quite extrodinary in their craftmanship. One day, a boy from the village passed the window of her workshop. Curious by the sounds of metal on metal, he peeked in with a shock. The Blacksmith seemed to be quite beautiful despite the extra arms petruding from her back along with a rather round spider like abdomin. With a gasp, the boy had ran back to the village to tell the tale. Upon the return to the blacksmith's home with the villagers in toe. It was all gone but a single strand of spider silk.

Its probably like witch burnings in that they happened but a lot less than its made out to be by senzationalised modern depictions. Most people back then would likely know that stories were mostly just stories, something to make life more interesting, but likely of little merit as they had lived most of their own life without seeing anything supernatural. People have always been the same around the world, sceptisism is nothing new, and nothing is more natural, at least as a young man, than questioning the validity of what your parents thaught you. Youthfull rebellions and such. Not afraid of monsters anymore mom.

In the Edo era, a person doing ominous/violent things used to be seen as Kitsune-Tsuki (Possessed by a fox), and the person was usually held under house arrest until s/he starts to behave normally. I don't think those people were killed often (I am positive most of them were schizophrenic or having serious mental issues), there are records of villagers getting so scared and killing the person, or the whole family sometimes.

I wonder what was the reasoning for asking the Tengu for the hand of Jorogumo. Would a Tengu be perceived as a sort of the master of that forest making him an authority figure?
@Linfamy
@Linfamy 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. Tengus have a reputation of being powerful figures in the forest, so that area probably did have a tengu authority figure.

@@Linfamy so hypothetically a Tengu would be standing in for a father/parent in absent of actually (known) father/parent? I love the idea that the woodcutter wanted to marry the Jorogumo properly, with the consent of parental figure and all.

When most people think of Spider-Human Hybrids, they usually think about the Greek Arachne, even in many Japanese Animes they use an Arachne(which I find weird since Japan already has Spider Yokai), there ready needs to be more attention & love for the Jorogumo, because the Jorogumo seems more awesome than Arachne any day.

The joro spider has become established in America. That’s not a joke, they hitched a ride on a ship and have spread along the east coast. So we can look forward to jorogumo showing up in forests.

So why did the woodcutter ask a Tengu for permission to marry the Jorogumo? Are Tengu thought to have particularly authority over human/yokai unions, or was it just that the Tengu was the closest Yokai male on hand?
