For novice lifters body recomposition is certainly possible, and it doesn't look like Merc has been lifting for any extended period of time. That being said, yeah you're right, gaining muscle and losing fat aren't achievable concurrently for an intermediate lifter, at least from an optimal standpoint.

gym in the early a.m. is by far the best... noone there and you dont have to wait for anything. This is generally the same way for any gym really. I hit my gym at 5 a.m. before work, maybe about 5 people there when i showup, and about 15 people are there when I leave around 6. On saturdays its even better. early morning>late day/night anyday imo.

Even if you meant them in person and learn real names the name you have known them by for years still usually goes. Happens in rl too. Families may call someone Jimmy but everyone else knows them as James as an example.
