I have both the 35mm and the 50mm. I use them all the time on my f80 and my D80 (yes the f80 is analog). I never thought about the image stabilization before, but not having it hasn't stopped me getting some great shots. As for sharpness it is pretty sharp (especially on full frame) when it is focused properly. I think that it also gives the photos quite a lot of character. Probably one of the best photo bargains out there.

Thank you so much for this review! I was wondering how much better the nikon 50 1.8g is compared to this lens. Even though you didn't include the footage and images from that lens, this quality, from what i can see in this video, is good enough. I wished you'd add more still images as i intens to use this lens for photography.

You can get a good used Nikon 50mm 1.8 G for USD 120.00. The risk that this lens will not autofocus with certain Nikon cameras is too great. The image quality is going to be lower as well and there is no weather sealing.

A battery grip will help its use for video and steadiness in stills. Better to use back button focussing.

I think I used my Sony a5100 with an old Tokina 28mm f/2.8 FD mount lens with a speedbooster. For the sound I plugged a Speedlink Spes lavalier mic into my phone. So it's really quite an affordable setup :)

It really depends on your budget. Both are worth it. If shooting wide open at f/1.8 is important to you, the Nikkor is probably better.

Stick to the Nikon lenses. The 50mm f1.8 can be picked up used fairly cheaply. The 50mm is for FX Nikon cameras - NOT for DX.

My problem with that lens is that everyone complains about AF breaking after 2 weeks of use. Sounds like standard chinese build quality. Maybe they just got a bad one, idk, but not many people are using it in the field and reviewing after real use, so I feel like if I buy that I'm just throwing money away on chinese crap.

Its not that big of a deal, you get a 1 year warranty so youll keep getting new ones. I sometimes prefer cheaper products with warranties over more expensive things that dont have warranties.

In this case, it does not. You need to have an interchangeable lens camera, a Nikon DSLR works best. You can get adapters for mirrorless cameras though.
