They may not be called "expansion packs" anymore, but many large DLC's tend to be similar to expansion packs in terms of size. MTX passed by unnoticed (and doesn't help that the idea behind them could be legitimate especially for free to play titles as a way to allow for long term support for games without having to rely on a subscription system). Lootboxes stirred the beast, sadly too late as they were already everywhere by the time outrage happened. But NFTs, now we are ready.. and we are already mad from all the other BS AAA companies keep shovelling.

The fact that NFTs are so much more financially punishing than releasing broken games is both amazing and frustrating beyond belief. Like seriously it is good that NFTs are so bad for companies that even EA will back off, but releasing broken games isn't bad enough for them to back off from doing it is a sad state of affairs.

Saying NFT's are environmentally friendly is like saying clean coal. I think CEO's of gaming companies just wake up one day on a random day and say "huh what is the quickest way I can sink my company? Oh I got it! NFT's!"
@paperluigi61322 жыл бұрын
I think I found a good analogy. NFTs are basically like Cloud Gaming; you don’t actually own it, you’re renting it. And when the server shuts down, you had wasted money for a key to something that isn’t permanent. Also, this is good. We couldn’t stop microtransactions and lootboxes in AAA gaming, but we CAN stop NFTs.

As an artist, there are a lot of people trying to take advantage of the trend, both for standard illustration and in regards to video game artwork/development. It goes beyond people trying to milk NFT's for any money they can, a lot of them are trying to take advantage of artists, especially since a lot of artists are not in the loop in regards to the fact that they are entitled to royalties; which leads to people trying to pay cheap for art, then cash in with it as an NFT. A lot of artists are very fed up with people trying to hire them, many people as well as myself simply refuse to consider anything involved with crypto. As one artist so eloquently put it "NFT should stand for 'No Fucking Thanks'".

I can't help but wonder if some small part of the rabid rush for NFTs and the metaverse is, in a way, inspired by the heavily monetized VR world of "Ready Player One". The OASIS' monetization of various elements of IPs, fueled by obsessive nostalgia, must seem like nirvana for these corps. The way some people have described gaming NFTs, like you can carry skins to any game you want, reminds me of how characters, skins, vehicles and weapons transferred between the RPO VR worlds.
@CrimsonBlasphemy2 жыл бұрын
While that may be drawing in some people into the brain dead hype. That's like saying the cyanide capsule is cotton candy flavored. When you dig into the root of the "Blockchain" and "Cryptocurrency" world you will find the same types (and often the exact same people) who pushed and profited from Subprime mortgages. You can also find Dot-Com Bubble personalities making a comeback. Con-artists, nothing but scammers and charlatans. And they have always been great as separating Venture Capitalists (who are actually quite stupid people) from their money.
@Kagatoamv2 жыл бұрын
@@CrimsonBlasphemy True, the bigger picture is an overall sense of it being a big scheme, the opportunity to create a bubble and fleece anyone they can draw in. I wasn't aware that the sub-prime and dot-com bubble guys were back at it. Kind of reminds me of the whole sealed video game collecting market, people trying to insist something is collectable as an "investment".

Hey, do you know of a good detailed summary of why NFT are so hated? . All I glean from the tirades I see on this are, there no detailed examples of how they will be used in game , that being block chain they have environmental issues, that they are seen as another monetization route. It's often pointed out that the same expected uses can be achieved with existing tech, and have been , so apart from the environmental concerns what is setting NFT's apart from this existing tech that now the "community" put it's foot down? Is not pandoras box already open , and the community in large part already , seemingly willingly, participating in the markets released?

@@tdsdave line go up by folding ideas. in a nutshell NFTs in their current form (addendums onto Ethereums blockchain via 'smart contracts') are worthless (and 'smart contracts' as a whole are basically useless as the size limit is Twenty four KILObytes. ) . people buying in or have bought it are playing hot potato. the asset they spent real money on has no future. therefore if you spread the word about it, you get the next idiot to buy you out, passing the potato.
@tdsdave2 жыл бұрын
@@mfThump Hey , not sure I got to see all your post, it seems to start mid thought "line go up by folding ideas"? Reference to another commentator's comment?. So if I parse what you do write, you'd say the/a problem is that at some point the NFT items will become un-sell able , the smart contract capacity to track can be exhausted. At this time people buy things in game that have no future , they are not even trade able , the "investment" lost. What difference to these people would such a purchase be if NFT backed? Obviously it would be misleading to say you can sell something which in reality you cannot . It reminds me of leaseholds on property in the real world, where the possibility of renewing it , is up to the freeholder . It maybe that I do not understand these crypto models well enough to really see the problem, probably likely . Personally I never buy anything superfluous to my game experience , I do not participate in any micro-transaction systems of a game, my main concern for such things is pay to win. If someone , imo is foolish enough to buy a virtual hat in game, I do not understand this horror narrative about how in particular they do it. Cheers for your thoughts.
@kuzehotarubi69122 жыл бұрын
@@tdsdave IDK what you are trying to achieve by writing this essay, but in all regards, NFTs does not help in any way in term of improving gaming experience. That is the most important part, ALL of them tried to get around saying that it will improve gaming experience, but have it ever been true since they introduce mircotransaction and lootbox? NOPE. That alone is enough for the hate honestly, why would we ever approve it when it's purpose is purely to give more money to these companies? Instead of NFTs, they can just sell physical and digital merchandises. The environmental impact is just a supporting point. The fact that they desired to use "Crypto" itself is shady, "Cryto"s are meant to hide the source of money by using hashes. Why would you want to use such a thing in gaming?
@monody2 жыл бұрын
@@tdsdave Can say from a development side, NFTs are an annoying distraction. Alongside the case of doing nothing valuable or new compared to existing markets and resources, they do it at a cost to core development of other game features. We waste more time building and integrating games with marketplaces than actually revving and delivering playable content. It actively distracts from core game development, which inevitably becomes counterproductive to making a valuable asset to warrant having spent so much time on establishing/ integrating a crypto marketplace.

In 1961 the artist Piero Manzoni took his poop, sealed it in metal cans and sold them for money. Today these are quite valuable despite the fact they tend to explode. And even thought it's just 💩 in cans, it's still more useful than nfts. And probably a better investment, too.
