To the few that are defending NFTs - I get it. You're holding some yourself, aren't you? And you hope to sell them so you can be a millionaire without, you know, actually contributing anything of actual worth to society. I'm a doctor. I heal sick people. I actually EARN the money I make (and no, I don't work in the US health system, I work in the Australian health system). But NFT generators? What do they contribute to society? Great artwork? Yeah, no. You know it's worthless garbage, being sold simply because the hopeless hope they can exit the rat race, and the grifters prey on the stupid, gullible and/or greedy. If you defend NFTs you're either a fool or an intelligent person who knows they're trying to sell worthless tokens, but desperately hope against hope that people don't catch on until they sell their token to a greater fool. It's a bubble. Of course, you can make money off a bubble before it bursts. But that doesn't change the fact that it is still a bubble and the end result is that more people will be hurt when it bursts than will ever make money off of it. It will be a net negative to society. And if all you care about is taking money from fools while providing nothing of actual value, then you're a parasite. Maybe a clever parasite. But a parasite nonetheless, whose profits are derived from human misery. What misery you ask? Well, the misery of the hopeful taking the money they earned from doing, you know, actual work, and funnelling into a speculative bubble. So go on - defend NFTs. All I hear is "I'm an idiot" or "I'm a parasite".

This is the natural conclusion to gamers failing to push back against Horse Armour. Game companies will continue to push NFTs because gamers have failed to back up their boycott threats for 16 years. Companies know that the initial pushback means little in the long term. Get enough whales hooked on buying NFTs and they can overrule every criticism against the practice with "It makes money." On the other hand, the backlash against NFTs is a notable volume louder than any previous controversy. No other controversy has had developers backing up the gaming public to this extent. There's a chance that consumers could win against this NFT push. But the victory will be fought at every step by the gaming industry and its insidious, decades long push to treat gamers like ATMs.

It's great to see developers revolting but when it comes down to the wire are the developers going to quit their job instead of implementing NFTs? I wouldn't blame developers for not leaving as they obviously have to feed their families and wouldn't get another job easily in a similar area if most companies are looking into NFT implementation. Same for us gamers, we are not happy about it but most likely still play the games as they come out and unsuspecting consumers will keep buying them as usual. Unless investors are against NFTs we sadly will most likely see NFTs in more and more games, unregulated and without regard to security or copyright misuse. Just like loot boxes governments, in most countries, are many years behind in legislation addressing issues in the digital space and there will be many years of NFT misuse before governments step in, if at all, to address the possible negative misuse and fallout.

Investors invest capital on the premise that they’ll see a net positive return. If people stop buying games from a developer or publisher because of the use of NFTs then the investment won’t see a return because the company will have to use the investment capital to cover overheads.

They'd need to change the contract for that, something they cannot do without the employees permission. Sure, they can fire an employee that refuses, but that'll be termination of contract through normal means, not with the employees fault. They'll be entitled to all the privileges they have, like notice period and such. Furthermore, if the company will fire a large amount of people in a short period that way, they may find themselves with some unforeseen consequences. At least for studios in the European Union. USA's employee protection is non-existent.
@persinitrix2 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing. Even if you value NFT's, handing them out to people just devalues the collection. If there is a considerable portion of that NFT community that got handed them it drastically lowers the market price of the rest. A considerable portion of NFT culture is based on exclusivity and this completely goes against that.

@phibu75172 жыл бұрын
microtransactions as in MICRO.. are good for f2p games, as there has to be some form of income for sutainability of the game, unfortunately it got adapted into p2p games and gotten out of hand with now having single skins cost the same as a full price game or worse.
@umbaupause2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I like the idea of microtransactions still - if it's fair and makes sense. Imagine a cheap racing game that is excellent, but if you want you can buy some more racers or tracks for a good price. That could be cool as a "buy to try" model, and if you want the full edition, you can just buy an equally fairly priced full pack right away, maybe for a little less than if you try first and get everything later. But having a single like recolor skin sold for 15 bucks isn't a microtransaction in the logical sense anymore, it's just trying to sell you overpriced garbage. Sadly that's what this stuff has become, though.

Something that needs to be mentioned about nfts and in-game monetization and why entire "games" can be built and centered around being a business platform rather than an actual videogame, is quite simple: Total personal control over assets. In the real world, when you accumulate assets and worth, in most cases it's either influenced by governing factors such as taxation and other forms of limitation on what you can/can't do with your assets. By making it all exist in an online trading environment, you essentially bypass government restrictions altogether, and is pretty much the equivalent of moving your financial sources into non-restricted nations like Switzerland. The benefit of the digital platform is that you don't physically have to relocate anything, you don't have to fill out extensive paperwork, you don't have to deal with bureaucracy, etc. It puts your wealth fully in your own hands, and that's why it is so alluring to so many people who don't have the commitment/reason to go through real life bureaucracy to achieve similar results. And that's why greedy corpos are so quick to invest and hype up marketing schemes such as nfts and online item value in general. It's a truly free market, and it is by nature a very attractive proposition for a lot of people who don't have a single thought minded towards gaming itself. It's pure business. And it sucks.
