Every time I pass by the artificial hill which King Herod built two thousand years ago, I imagine the sounds of the banging of the slaves' hammers as they carved their way up the hill, the footsteps of the rebels who took refuge in it, and the ringing of the sheep's bells as they grazed in the fields below..
