It's rather like Andrew Jackson abandoning Indians when his life was saved by one during war. Perhaps it's the returning to the real world from a world without such rules that does it. In the wild and war, the social morès don't really hold, but that time ends when you go back to the shock of the society you left behind you.

also in that letter Clark emphasized that York be sold down the river to an evil master / horrible plantation in new orleans to make his life living hell you left that part out .
