There are many well-known gardens composed of 'rooms' in England, including the famous Hidcote Manor and Sissinghurst. However, York Gate, on the edge of Leeds, is just as much a gem of garden design. Created by Robin and Fredrick Spencer, who both died tragically young, it fell to wife and mother Sibyl to maintain the garden until her death in 1994. As you can see, she is an indomitable Yorkshire woman, who was best-known in Adel as the president of the Women's Institute, always begining the meetings with a booming "hello"! The garden is now maintained and opened by the Gardeners' Royal Benevolent Society.
