Located in the heart of York, England, the York Museum Gardens are botanical gardens situated alongside the River Ouse. Encompassing approximately 10 acres of land that once belonged to St. Mary's Abbey, these gardens were established in the 1830s through the efforts of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, and they also house the Yorkshire Museum.
Apart from the Yorkshire Museum, all other ruins are accessible without charge. The Gardens are open seven days a week, from 9 am to 6 pm.
Within the gardens, you'll find numerous historic structures. These include remnants of the western corner of the Roman fort of Eboracum, featuring the Multangular Tower and sections of the Roman walls. Nearby stands the Anglian Tower, likely integrated into the remains of a late Roman-era fortress. During the Middle Ages, this tower underwent expansion, and the Roman walls became part of York's city fortifications.
Many other medieval buildings within the gardens are associated with St.Mary's Abbey.
These include the ruins of the abbey church, the Hospitium, the St. Mary's lodge, and a portion of the surviving precinct wall. On the east side of the gardens, you'll discover the remains of St. Leonard's Hospital chapel and undercroft.
