York Minster Anglican Church is a Gothic Cathedral in York, England and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe alongside Cologne Cathedral. The Minster is the seat of the bishop of York, the second-highest office of the Church of England, and is cathedral for the Diocese of York; it is run by a Dean and Chapter under the Dean of York. The formal title of York Minster is The Cathedral and Metropolitan Church of St Peter in York.
The English Reformation led to the first Anglican archbishop, the looting of much of the cathedral's treasures, and the loss of much of the church lands. Under Elizabeth I there was a concerted effort to remove all traces of the Roman Catholic Church from the cathedral; there was much destruction of tombs, windows, and altars. In the English Civil War the city was besieged and fell to the forces of Cromwell in 1644, but Thomas Fairfax prevented any further damage to the cathedral.

County: North Yorkshire

Psalm 8 1 O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in all the world * thou that has set thy glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies * that thou mightest still the enemy, and the avenger. 3 For I will consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers * the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained. 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him * and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 Thou madest him lower than the angels * to crown him with glory and worship. 6 Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands * and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet; 7 All sheep and oxen * yea, and the beasts of the field; 8 The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea * and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord our Governor * how excellent is thy Name in all the world!

Thanks a lot my brother. What ails the English man is something I can't understand. Why abandon such a rich heritage that your forefathers had worked so had and bestowed it to the world. Now Islamism had taken over England with its destructive agenda. Even the ordinary Englishman had forgotten that, Christianity is the bedrock of the modern civilization that we're enjoying today. Greed had taken over everything.

As an Anglican I have had myself be addressed as a "protestant" and as a "Catholic" by antagonistic associations. In fact, to be called a protestant and/or to be called a catholic are badges of great honor indeed! May it be that I am found to be worthy of being called a Christian. This musical setting is lovely. I love the Lutheran liturgy also and experience Lutheran Worship whenever possible.

I was taught in my confirmation class in the early 1970's that 'catholic' in the then called Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S. meant 'universal.' Period. Meaning it was and is worldwide. Confusing because some people think because we "believe in one holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church" it means the Roman Catholic Church. It doesn't. The Anglican Church or Communion is the bridge church between Catholic and Protestant Christianity: neither Catholic nor Protestant but both at same time.

I understand what you are saying. I've been both, RC and Protestant but the ill-feeling of one group toward the other is the direct reverse of what Jesus told us to be. There will always be faults on both sides because we're all human and are all full of flaws. If we all just look to Jesus and not judge, as He commanded us, we'd be truly spreading His light to the world. I have decided long ago to be a "non-denominational" Christian - Jesus is enough. God bless, Lolly x

From the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer: Gracious Father, we pray for thy holy Catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Savior. Amen.

Some people not up to date with English History - this is a Protestant Cathedral (Church of England) with a predominantly Protestant congregation, though some Roman Catholics are known to attend C of E AND also take Communion (all are invited)! This welcome is not returned by the Roman Catholic churches. Before anyone blunders on about the original true Roman faith blah, blah! Remember, the Celtic priests were spreading the word of Christ in Britain and Ireland a couple of centuries BEFORE Augustine finally arrived in Kent. If the Roman Church had had Vatican II four hundred years earlier there might not have been the schism that was the Reformation. The Eastern church managed to preach in the relevant native languages (rather than Latin) from the off.
@dreadnaught90
@dreadnaught90 8 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it is you who is not up to date. A Minster pre-dates the Reformation and reflects it's original use as a base for missionaries. Cathedrals are the home church of a Bishop. Since the Reformation, some Minsters like York (and unlike Beverley Minster) became the home church/seat of a Bishop but because of it's original name the tile of Minister was kept. So...this particular building is still called called York Minster for a reason. One which apparently you are unaware of. All of this information is in the guide available at York Minster.

The church of England is not technically considered a protestant religion in the current use of the word. In fact, most protestant religions came from those 'protesting' the catholic rites and ceremonies of the CofE.

This same psalm tone is used in the 1941 Lutheran Hymnal as a setting to the Te Deum Laudamus in the Matins service. That setting alternates in the inner verses to a very pretty minor key version. The same setting has been moved to the currently used "Lutheran Service Book." A very pretty psalm tone.

FloJ71 It's by Henry Lawes, at psalm 148 in the 1932 Parish Psalter. A superb chant, one of the finest and grandest of all. The Parish Psalter shows Its name as "Laudate Dominum". Not hard to guess that it was the inspiration for Hubert Parry's tune of the same name used for the hymn "O Praise ye the Lord".

Lastly, one would be hard-pressed to find a better example of pride than Archbishop Cramner - who thought that the 1500-year old Church had gotten it wrong and that he had gotten it right. One cannot judge his intentions, but only his effects, which were lamentable, and led to the brutal persecution of the Catholic Church in England, and more so in Ireland.

The words of Psalm VIII from the Book of Common Prayer Psalter (1662) and the King James version of the Bible, modified slightly to reflect the words actually sung by the choir: 1 O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy name in all the world : thou that hast set thy glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouths of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies : that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers : the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained, 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him : and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels : and dost crown him with glory and worship. 6 Thou makest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands : and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet; 7 All sheep and oxen : yea, and the beasts of the field; 8 The birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea : and whatsoever moveth through the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord our Governor : how excellent is thy name in all the world! ---------- Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.
