In 2023, YRP charged a total of 1,350 people with 1,884 impaired-related charges. The number of impaired drivers over the course of the year marks roughly a six per cent drop from the 1,441 reported in 2022.
During the holiday season from November 16, 2023 to January 1, 2024, between our Festive RIDE program and region-wide enforcement by officers in the Road Safety Bureau and the districts, a total of 170 drivers were charged with 242 impaired-related offences.
In one incident-which took place in the early morning hours of New Year’s Eve-officers spotted a vehicle driving over a median in the area of Bathurst Street and King Road in King Township. Officers observed the vehicle travelling at a slow rate of speed and crossing into the opposite lanes of traffic. Police followed the vehicle, which came to a stop in the middle of the roadway. Fluids were seen leaking from the vehicle and all four tires were severely damaged.
Breath samples submitted by the driver were found to be over the legal limit. The driver of the vehicle was subsequently charged with Impaired Operation, Impaired Operation - BAC 80 Plus and two counts of Driving While Prohibited.
