Rebuilding Complex Structural Jacking Points On Mat Armstrong's Classic BMW E24 - Better Than New!

In this episode we continue stripping the underside of Mat Armstrong's Classic BMW E24 635 CSI and take off them crusty corroded brake and fuel lines. We then start cutting out the major structural front jacking point and hand fabricate it from scratch. This was made up of 5 different panels which we made individually then welded together.
The jacking point is made of thicker metal and is better than new. We then moved onto the rusty floor by grinding the hole out and making a new piece. Then came the sill with the smaller front jacking point. We cut the sill section off and fount yet more hidden rust!!!
There seems to be a running theme here.... Rust..... and lots of it!

Those who’ve never cut sheet steel or tried to get a part to conform to metal surrounding it won’t quite appreciate what’s been accomplished in this episode. I found the metal archeology, re manufacturing and final assembly in situ of that left side front jacking point in my top few, ever, challenges to watch being solved. Honestly, kudos, merely decoding how the original rusty, cut-out lump was formed was a helluva task in three dimensions. I gave a cheer when you finally offered it back up. Consider us your cheering audience as you executed a complex series of moves in a BMX stunt or absolutely planted the finale to a floor routine in gymnastics. Because this is art at a high level. As a E12 owner (which is in essence the same platform as the E24) i can tell you that you did a lot of work repairing a piece which isn't a jacking point at all. The work is done nice and correct, but the square box at the front isn't a jacking point, and because this square box is often misused as a jacking point is the reason it starts rusting away. The real jacking point is situated 20cm backwards under the sill, which is rotten away also on this E24. Ofcourse i had the same misery on my E12, and did a repair on that section with deleting the square box. Love your channel by the way, keep on doing what you do now.

Can you say what the purpose of the box piece was, given it’s not “the” jacking point? I too AssUMed it was the jacking point.

@@GT380man yes, these points are "transport brackets" and used on the assembly line in the factory. All older bmw's have them. If you start working on the actual jacking points you'll see reinforcement brackets in the sill.

BMW's construction here of multiple sheets of metal to strengthen the chassis always amazes me from a rust point of view. I would quote Jeremy Clarckson's "what would possibly go wrong?!' A nightmare to duplicate.

I thought my e28 was bad when I did it! This 24 is a basket case. Good to see you doing it properly. The only thing I would say is Mat will not be running a 220bhp engine in it so while your at it I would reinforce as well as repair. I triple skinned where the front jacking point are & then tied them into the chassis rails with box section. I triple skinned the rear axle mounts as well as my s38b36 M5 engine will be fitted with a turbo. Love your work.
