Really cool video Kris . Ive got a few different youngish varieties and I'm still getting my head around the differences. This video helps me hugely. The oriphyllus one at the end is stunning. Cheers 👍

Thank you for this video. I have, after seeing yours, added a few Trachycarpus to my garden, all very small, most seedlings just starting to produce “proper” fronds, but I have bought a slightly larger princips (from Pan Global Plants) and, a month ago ukhrulensis from the Great Dixter Plant Fair. It’s great to see what I can expect from them.

wow the palms looking great- the Trachycarpus Oreophillus looks incredible. Still cannot understand people saying T Manipur and T Oreophillus are the same palm-they look radically different. There has to be a time we will find out how hardy they all are.

Hi kris I’ve been looking forward to this video 😃 question please, when the lower leaves are going yellow is that time to prune them? I know you mentioned acidic 🤔
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 жыл бұрын
If the leaves go yellow due to age, yes it's good to remove them. If because they are nutrient deficient then the correct feed can make them greener again.

Hi Kris.. Amazing palms! Very interesting to see how variable the growth rates are.. I’m looking for a Trachycarpus Ukhrulensis. Just wondering if you know anywhere in the UK that currently sells them? Seems a really hard palm to come by! Cheers..

@Daniel Zin Go see KZbin channels BananaJSSI & Gulf IslandRock videos. Aka JungleJoeC (JoeClemente & Wendy) He's got a palm nursery & BB in Salt Spring Island Canada. Takagii are Trachycarpus Fortunei x Wagnerianus hybrids. Joe has videos of these palms in many sizes. Very elegant. Look for his Trachycarpus Hybrids videos. Perhaps he'll drop you some links.

Hey kris, kris here 😂 can I ask where you source seeds or seedlings of some of these varieties? I want to do something similar as I love these palms and curious to see what survives and grows quick here in Scotland
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS Жыл бұрын
It's really hard to find most of these now as many were only collected a few times as seeds from the wild. You have more chance sourcing from Europe or private sales

@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 жыл бұрын
Nova is fast growing. Mines in a sheltered shady location to keep the leaves in a good condition. Princeps hybrid is by far the quickest.

Hi Kris. Do you ever sell or hybridise some seed? An Oreophilus x Nova could be pretty special.
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I'm aware seed has never been produced in cultivation as still relatively new to the western world.
@dibblethwaite
@dibblethwaite 3 жыл бұрын
Kris, I wonder if you can answer a question. I have a couple of trachys I raised from seed years ago that was supposed to be princeps. There was a lot of fuss online at the time about fake princeps seeds and I've always assumed that's what I got and they were just fortunii. They don't look any different to fortunii my untrained eye. This year one of them flowered in September. My fortunii always flowers in Spring. Does this Autumn flowering mean it's something different?
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 жыл бұрын
The first rounds of princeps seeds offered often turned out to be nova or "Green princeps" I would imagine that you probably have nova plants rather than princeps plants.

I have heard that nova flowers a bit earlier than other species of Trachycarpus, I haven't heard as much as several months early in a different part of the growing season, but perhaps the unusual flowering pattern is additional evidence that you have nova.

Great video! Have you given any thought as to what you will do once they start to flower? Perhaps some crosses? Or search out locals to produce pure seeds?

I'm hoping in time I'll be able to get pure seeds and hybrids. Getting oreophilus to flower would be amazing.
