This is by far the most thorough review of Sailor nibs I have seen - well done and thank you! When you are writing with the music Nibs you rotated your pen to the paper, probably to write around your camera. If the Music nib is used square on to the paper, which is like the 'default setting' then the vertical lines are thick and the horizontal ones are thin, not the other way round as you describe them. I have also heard it said that if you use this to write music, then the pen is held perpendicular to the paper and rotated 90 degrees, so then it would of course produce thick horizontals and thin verticals. I have both 14k and 21k sailor MS nibs and love them both. Thanks again.

The approximate line width with the multiliner is super helpful. It’s hard to get a sense of actual line width through a video (with zoom and shooting styles), so it’s nice to have something objective to compare it to. Neat idea! Thanks for the helpful video!

The Sailor Shikiori Dragon Palace is one of the most beautiful pens out there. The gold shimmer adds dimension to the pen and makes the resin look like either real jade (often used to make dragon figurines in Asia) or flickers of sunlight on seafoam. The fairy tale itself has a great moral, emphasizing kindness. A fisherman saved a turtle's life, and the reward for his kind deed was that the turtle took the fisherman on a trip to see the Dragon Palace, home of the Dragon King/sea god.

It's a good brand. The writing feel is very much like a pencil. It's about a 6 on the dry/wet scale. I enjoy writing with mine. The thing that Sailor does so well is making even finer nibs still feel relatively smooth. You can tell looking at this video that even the extra fine nib was somewhat wet. Overall it's a very controlled ink flow and that results in a very controlled writing experience, which I enjoy. I have an F, MF, and M nib. My favorite overall is the Medium, but I enjoy the Medium-fine as well. It's like a European EF, but better. But I will say that if "buttery smoothness" is your target, you probably won't enjoy Sailor. Pleasant feedback is the name of the game with them.

Pens are work of beauty in most cases. But the nib determines whether one will enjoy writing with the pen, for regardless of a pens aesthetics one needs enjoy the feel of the nib on paper. A most detailed video and so very informative! I like the Japanese fine and medium nibs most given their line width. Great video and it took a lot of work. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this extensive video. I just ordered the lucky charm pro gear slim from you guys with the 14k medium. It will be my first sailor pen and I think you did a great job at preparing me for it! Though it was a really hard choice, the smoothness of the 21k was very tempting, I thought I’d try the classic for my first experience and go from there.

@@monicah7230 so good. It’s still my favorite and I use it all the time. The medium has been fine for me, I think with light pressure I’m still able to get a decently fine line, but I love the sound of the feedback the medium gives me and I’m not sure if a mf would be less. I’d say go for it, it’s such great quality it’ll last forever. My other go to is a twisbi, definitely not the same caliber but it is still really good quality and fun to write with. If you don’t have one yet I highly recommend it.

An excellent comparison of the two nibs. I chose to buy a Sapporo “White Russian “ and a 1911L a year ago both in medium nibs and love them both., however I lean to the 1911L more for a daily writer due to its larger size. Might even try the “King of Pens” but wouldn’t realize any line difference from the 1911L. I do appreciate the slight feedback when compared to my medium nibbed Pelikan 800 series pens. I cringed as I watched the young lady post the cap on the pro gear! 🙀

I have both 14K slim and 21K std versions in M-F. I wouldn't say line thickness is different when no pressure applied, but 21K nib is more interesting. It is noticeable softer, has more feel when writing, and if you push it harder you'll get thicker line. So it provides sort of line variation , which 14K slim version nib doesnt have

I keep an eye out on good deals for used pens with nibs I don't expect to use everyday. Thankfully there's a very active community where I live. The puzzling bit to all of this (very good and useful) video is, the MF and M writing with the 14kt nib look equally sized. Maybe the weight you applied changed somehow, or maybe it's like the EF and F, they just make them equal and give them 2 names :)).

Thank you so much for this. I have been a bit frustrated with getting Sailor nibs that are way too fine for me when they say M. I am relatively new to Sailor nibs. It is especially good to know that that the 21K M write much thicker than most of your comparisons with the 14K! From your video here I have decided that 21K M is the thinnest Sailor I can cope with. Hello, thankyou for such a detailed comparison. I have watched this video like 5 times. I am very confused between PG MF vs PG F 21k. Reason - i own PGS - F 14k which I feel is tad bit drier (running shin Kai) though smooth nonetheless with a gentle feedback. I usually use cheap/copy office paper. Basically I like the line width on pilot ch92 fine (which is wider than PGS fine 14k) but I am looking for feedback and I feel pilot nib react to pressure much more . If anyone/yoseka team read this comment. Suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Anyways, thankyou for putting in efforts for this video!!

I would love an MF due to the uniqueness of it, but would rather stick closer to a Pilot medium than fine.

Thanks for watching David! Pilot Fine and Sailor Fine are quite close actually--of course it depends on which pen. For example, Sailor Fine and Custom 823 F are similar in line width as is the Sailor 21k Medium and Custom 823 Medium. The MF would be somewhere in the middle. Hope this helps!

Congratulations on creating such an exhaustive video on Sailor nibs. It’s probably one of a kind on Sailor nibs on KZbin. I am looking to get a Sailor Pro Gear Slim and I am really undecided about fine and medium nib sizes. I already own a Platinum 3776 Century in Fine and enjoy it. I have smallish handwriting. I am gravitating towards a fine nib in Sailor as I already use a Platinum fine. But, then again, I think a medium 14k Sailor nib wouldn’t be such a bad idea for the sake of variety. Interestingly, the writing sample of a medium 14k Sailor nib sent by my trusted pen store looks broader than yours, making me a little skeptical of getting a medium 14K Sailor nib. What would you recommend? A Sailor 14k fine or medium nib. Thank you.
@sajjadhusain41462 жыл бұрын
I’d recommend the 14k medium, not only for the sake of variety, but also for the fact that I found the 14k nibs to be harder, slightly drier and maybe ver so slightly thinner in line-width than their softer, wetter 21k counterparts. In that sense, the 14k medium would likely please you with its little more wetness and just about desirable line-width (an acceptably good medium line). I’ll admit, though, that a majority of my Sailor pens are the 21k ones.
@MrJungleman12 жыл бұрын

@@MrJungleman1 Oh, that’s great Ajay. Frankly, either way, you cannot go wrong with the Sailor nibs. They are almost always superbly tuned out of the box writers. So, you did just as well in finally deciding to just go for the F nib. The EF is also extremely nice. The only EF I ever really liked. Even their steel nibs are pretty good, in my experience. I think even the 14k M-F (medium-fine) when available is a good option for its true middle grind between the F and the M nibs. Anyway, it will be good to hear later how you feel about the pen and the nib. Good luck!

I may have missed it but it seemed like you have said that wetness and paper feedback had somehow something to do with the material. It's important to make it clear: the tip is not gold, it can be finished smoother or courser by a professional, wetness is also adjustable. The only difference 14k and 21k might have is softness, and even then it depends on the materials formula. 14k just means it's 58.5% gold, says nothing about what the rest of the mix is, or how thick the nib is, which would determine the flexibility of the nib. In the bottom line, the gold content is more a status symbol than an actual meaningful metric of performance and user experience.

Wetness and degree of feedback does indeed relate to material of the nib. Softer nib materials allow more ink to flow onto the page. More ink means more lubrication between the nib and the page, and therefore a smoother feel.

WTF?! The M-F has a more large tract stroke than M in 14kt nib!

Video is very good. But people, no one told her how to hold a pen in all these years... ? Pen review who never write cursive is a gold find on its own.
