Yosemite Nature Notes 35: Pacific Fishers

In 1946, trapping of fishers was banned in California - but at that point, their population numbers were so low that they still haven't recovered. Now, one of the biggest threats are large-scale wildfires.
To find a fisher is pretty difficult - learn how wildlife biologists are working to study and save the elusive and endangered pacific fisher in Yosemite National Park.

I'm surprised they didn't mention the sound of a fisher. My daughter had just moved to Connecticut and heard the screaming of an animal one night outside her apartment. Someone told her it was a Fisher. We never heard of a Fisher. She never saw it, but it made quite the sound.

It is so cool to see scientists at work. Jobs in Yosemite National Park are posting on a rolling basis throughout the year. For park ranger positions, postings are listed on USAJobs.gov. The Conservancy also hires staff to work in the park and our positions are at yosemite.org/careers

It would help if you were a minority female. I was a ranger in the Forest Service and in Yosemite National Park and got to train the women who were my supervisors. I'm a white guy. One job I applied for, at Great Basin National Park, I got a 97 rating out of 100. A woman, much younger and less experienced that I, got the job. Of course, she started out with a 10 point preference rating... kind of like a veteran would get.
