Just recently started this game for the first time, found this guy early on and if I remember right after beating him for his sword I kinda killed him for the rest of his gear because it was way better than what I had at the time

yeah, he really does have very good armor. The armor I'm using is actually from him who I encountered earlier and by some luck he got knocked out by single strike due to headcracker perk activating. I looted him without any worry and he gave me his shortsword.
