Kobalt is apparently coming out with an 8Ah version of this ultimate output battery, with presumably 21700’s in it. As someone who uses impact drivers for high-grade finish work (fences and decks and outdoor kitchens for millionaire clients in NYC), I really appreciate an impact driver that brings the heat gradually, it offers so much more control over where the screw head ends up. That's a big deal when you're driving a few hundred screws and want them all to look perfect and identical. So I think the slow-climb curve of the XTR is more desirable for a driver. Anything you'd want faster beans for, you'd be in the impact wrench side of things.
@DMSparky2 жыл бұрын
I agree, seems like a lot of the newest brushless tools are like operating an on and off switch. Brushed tools from 5-10 years seemed much more linear. The XTR appears to have the power when you really need it but not too much when you’re starting fasteners in delicate materials or trying to do precision work. I rarely use my m18 fuel as an electrician because many of the fasteners we deal with could strip the threads out with more then a few uga-duga’s.

The circ ended up being somewhat disappointing with pressure treated 4x4s. The issue of breaking adapters tells me that we've gotten to the point that power isn't really the differentiator between these tools, especially for typical uses. At least for the top tier ones, ergonomics, battery line, design, long term reliability, etc, etc, are far more important. The 1/4 inch hex shanks are the limiting factor for power, and these tools are to the point that any more power requires a step up to larger drives, like 1/2 inch or larger impact wrenches
@MrJamesonStyles2 жыл бұрын
I'm willing to bet that the breaking adapters is more commonly a problem on a rigid setup like the dyno. Doing big lags with wood, where the force of the blow gets a bit absorbed into the comparatively springy wood structure, probably saves the adapter. But I'll tell you, one thing I really want to see is this Kobalt made into a 3/8 drive. For doing lighter automotive tasks like brakes and linkages, this thing would be awesome in tighter spaces. I have the XTR high torque and she brings the beans, but she thicc.
@ccbowers2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJamesonStyles For some reason, my previous attempts at replying keep disappearing. I have seen the issue of breaking adapters with impact drivers (especially higher end models) on other channels, with your very example of driving lags into wood. Over the summer for example, "Man Caver Tools" had a bunch of videos with him complaining about this very issue and showing him breaking many adapters in his tests. These tests are of course still unrealistic, driving very large lags into tree stumps with no pilots holes, but still avoid the rigidity/shock issue you mention.

For driving tasks it is notably a bit slower than the other two. That said, this test is exactly why I wish they would make an impact wrench out of it, exactly like they seemed to do with their older model. What an absolute beast this thing would be with a 3/8 or 1/2 inch anvil! Or, even better, turn it into a Bosch Freak competitor with a hybrid anvil (it could certainly use one the way it can chew through adapters)! It would be a bit bigger than most compacts, yes, but it would certainly be justified by the power and price!

all the bluetooth stuff on tools is BS. nobody needs a fckn app for his impact to get the job done. the bosses whould beat the living sht out of the stupid ass ppl for playing with theire phone after every screw. useless crap. just drive that damn bolt in/out.

Do you think the non-quick eject Flex impact driver has better cooling/less overheating issues? I've seen some tool gore when people have stress test that quick eject model and doesn't look good at all.
@NWGR2 жыл бұрын
Great test! I have the milwaukee and love it, but if shopping today I'd be going for that new dewalt. The flex overheating is a dealbreaker, and the kobalt line not being very expansive removes that one from the running. IMHO of course.

Maybe test the non-XTR Kobalt. It’s $100 with charger, tool, and battery. Could be interesting to see how it stacks up since it is brushless and rated for 2000-inch lbs of force whereas the XTR is 2400-inch-pounds

Smart analysis. My thinking, in use, is very different. The heavy hitters mangle too many fasteners, and it's really not the purview of a 1/4" hex drive. I tend to prefer the mass centered in the palm to prevent fatigue and the more gentle power delivery like with the Bosch 12 volt (basically an every day tool for me), or the Milwaukee M12. When I need something with more battery or for driving something like a lag bolt (coincidentally, my task this morning), I like the way the M18 Surge is both quiet and how the "impacts" kind of have a curve to them. I once went to use a DeWalt impact driver and the client was so surprised by the noise that she literally spilled her coffee on herself.

I'm really excited to see what milwaukee does with their gen 3/4 now that Dewalt, makita, and Chervon have shown their hands. More importantly, I can't wait to pick up the deals on the current gen when it goes on clearance!

How do drills compare to impacts from the same company?
@rcud12 жыл бұрын
Just like they showed, I don't use these impact drivers on large lag bolts. Can break your adapter bit and will probably end up burning out your impact driver eventually. I did burn one out as well but was fixed under warranty. I use my bigger 1/2" impact wrench on those now.

I thought 150-200ish was probably pushing the limits for a driver socket adapter. Bought a set of adapters recently, wanted the 1/4" and 3/8"... it also came with a 1/2". Personally like seeing evidence of my constructive criticism/corrective comment being read and apparently understood well by the look of that graph explanation 👍

I agree. As you see, they break adapters all the time. If you need that much power you need an impact wrench or a torque wrench.

I of course would like to see the Ridgid octane 1/4 and 3/8 impact as they appear to be the same tool. And since those are not production models anymore I guess the subcompact and max impacts as well. I don't expect the latter to keep up with the competition.

That xtr line up is pretty awesome from what ive seen. Not sure on the longevity of the tools, but they definitely got the beans. The recip saw is no different. Only one to be more powerful from what ive seen is the metabo hpt multi volt. Not even the super sawzall, and the both shake the crap out of you less than the super sawzall

I dont know if it was a few faulty units, but FLEX seems to have quality control issues with breaking handles, and while it brings the speed for easier tasks, they struggle with more difficult tasks that need better low speed power. The tests reinforce that. They also caught the overheat issue which I saw in other videos too. I wouldnt buy FLEX at all at this point.

I put the anvil from a 3/8 drive impact into my Kobalt impact driver because it broke every bit I used with it but to get the power it has to have the high output batteries, the standard batteries drop the power way down.
@BeanoNoir2 жыл бұрын
The internals are very similar to the Skil 20v brushless impact driver. That one is even less expensive, often less than $140 with battery and charger on Amazon. I doubt the Skil has quite the power being a lower wattage unit, but it would be curious to see how well it stacks up.

I’d like to see how the Surge performs versus the standard gen 3; to see how much is left on the table by choosing a quieter (and easier to use in some environments) impact. Also - on overall length of the head - it’s absolutely a factor, even if shorter than the battery. I was rewiring a house this summer, and my impact with a short length auger was frequently the only thing I could fit in to tighter (oddly laid out) stud bays or joists. If the tool had been even 1/2” longer in the head there would have been a ton of areas I’d be stuck trying to find a workaround.

I just bought the FLEX kit that has this impact driver with the hammer drill last week. I'd like to point out that the FLEX kits give you One 5.0A/hr and One 2.5A/hr battery as opposed to TWO 4.0A/hr or 5.0A/hr batteries included in the other comparative brands (Milwaukee, Dewalt, Kobalt, etc). Keep that in mind if you are looking at these kits in terms of price, especially after the end if the year when the Lifetime Warranty promotion is expired. One of my main interests is the bit retention, especially with spade bits. One of the major problems with the Milwaukee impact drivers is that they eject the bits under load. VCG Construction has a few videos of this failure and the improvement Milwaukee made to the gen 3 FUEL design.
@GuyFromJupiter2 жыл бұрын
It seems to be a common issue on all the super powerful impacts, Kobalt and Flex included. It certainly doesn't seem affect them as badly as Milwaukee, but it does happen with things like spades.
@shauncatlett60662 жыл бұрын
@@GuyFromJupiter Well Milwaukee fixed the problem tlby adding an additional ball bearing in the collet and re-released as gen 3.5 (I'll post the link below) VCG Construction's video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJvZm6ZofL9snck

I like my kobalt tools. I've been using them for about 5 years. I don't care if they aren't "top tier" they are affordable and hold up well. Since no battery tool can yet replace my Ingersoll air tools it just doesn't matter.

Hey, have you guys ever considered testing the IR "Quiet Tools" versus their loud variants? According to the parts diagram for like a 2235QTiMAX it looks like the "muffler" is a single piece that wraps around the hammer assembly maybe, so you might be able to test the quiet tool and then remove the muffler and retest the same tool for a proper apples-to-apples. Would also be interesting to see if other brands' quiet variants have similar power disparity. I'm not an a**hole and prefer the quiet tools for my shopmates' sakes, curious how much I'm leaving on the table for that choice though.
