I just received my brown belt two days ago. Have been doing BJJ for a about 25 years but spent a large portion of that training with friends without grading. When i started grading, everything accelerated and my enjoyment grew exponentially. I looked at this video and other brown belt "expectation" videos so many times in the last couple of weeks. They were quite enlightening and i'm grateful to those who put them together.

Whatcha mean I have no game?? As a white belt, I do have a go-to technique and a go-to pass and stuff! I do the only one that I know well enough to apply in real rolling in that situation !! I even have, for some situations, a contingency, like, if X doesn't work, it opens up to Y :) ... and I pray that the other guy won't be proficient enough to counter my meh execution/transitions.

When I do become a black belt, ima set the tone for myself and my kids, when they ask me what it takes to be a black belt, my answer is gonna be "You have to enjoy it". I'm not about that spiritual, traditional and punctual life style. Alot of professors will say that being a black belt is about technique. I say that's only one side of it. The other side of it is how good u are, I meet alot of purples and browns that are like fighting Blue Belts still, because they're no good, but I do believe that if u know how to do alot of techniques, then why not. To explain my point a bit better, there're two sides to a coin, no matter what side u land on, ur still the same coin. The other thing I wanna express bluntly is the Red Belt. Realistically, the belt is an accomplishment, it doesn't do anything. The Red Belt is basically the retirement belt. It says "Your journey is over, not because there's nothing left for u to learn, but because you've reached the end of your life span to learn anything left." And every stripe on that Red Belt is just another symbol of u pushing urself until ur time comes. These are my opinions, and if anyone were to ask me "Who are you to say these things", I'm a human, a down to Earth one at that, who has an opinion. U can either absorb what I said, or leave it be. But I just don't see the same as other martial artists do. Also who u are shouldn't reflect on ur martial arts skills or ranking. U could be a shitty person, mean, always late, doesn't care about anything, like Abraham Marte and still be a champ, that's proof in the pudding. (By the way if anyone asks how Abraham is a shit person, he's an asshole, and cherry on top is that the guy hosts animal fights, and for me that's enough to be considered a shitty person). Anyways, that's just me, the black belt is urs to gain, and ur doing this for urself, always keep that in mind.
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 6 жыл бұрын
the coral belt is the "retirement" belt. retirement from fighting, that is. the red belt just may be the retirement from teaching belt, as well. not sure myself.
@walkingcorpse1224
@walkingcorpse1224 6 жыл бұрын
@@KamaJiuJitsu The Coral Belt is an odd one to me. Can't say I'm a fan of it or of how it looks. But the belt system used to be just white and black in Judo. The colors started coming out for the children. I have no idea how the red belt came to be, but ya, I mean to be a master of the art, I think is to be a champion, Cyborg, Bruno Malfacine, Keenan, Jacare, all those guys are Masters at this martial art. With that said, a Red Belt and Coral Belt doesn't mean grandmaster, just means, "his-story".
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 6 жыл бұрын
a top competitor doesn't necessarily mean they've "mastered" the art. the BJJ coral belt makes more sense to me than the red/white belt. after all, if a person goes from black to red, wouldn't the red/black belt represent a natural transition from black to red? as far as "titles" go. black belt "teacher" is Professor. to earn a coral, need to have been a black belt "professor" (not all black belts earn title "Professor/Teacher"). Coral title is "Master." red belt title is "Grand Master."
@walkingcorpse1224
@walkingcorpse1224 6 жыл бұрын
@@KamaJiuJitsu Not in my opinion. I just don't agree, like a doctor, they're usually at their best when they were younger, at the youngest age, clearly they're not masters, but somewhere in the middle they become masters, slowly declining at age, and then coral belt is sort of like the slowing down sign. Red belt to me is a last will. But like I said that's just my personal opinion. I can't really go back on it, u may learn more once ur a coral belt, but then it's only one side of the coin. Normally champions already know what works for them and I think they know how to do what works. So I consider them masters at the art, realistically, most of them are the definition of ridiculousness in skill level and knowledge.

In some way, it is kind of sad that if you are you, and not a copy of what the instructor wants as a character, you will never pass. This should be addressed in my opinion when they become blue belts. Then they can still be molded and work on it themselves, instead of being denied a promotion for non martial arts reasons.
@KamaJiuJitsu

True. But what if the student joins as a transferring brown belt?
@hendrikmoons8218
@hendrikmoons8218 3 жыл бұрын
@@KamaJiuJitsu Indeed a rare problem, for the reason you mentioned. Brown belts are rare, it is the last colored belt earned and with this amount of dedication, they will eventual technique wise become black belts. It is in this world possible that someone gets a new job or has a different reason to move. When people like these make it to a for them new gym, they ain't noobs, but indeed you need to get to know them. It is a more elegant dance between the "new brown belt" and his "new club instructor". For him this is great, because this new gym will address the basics a wee bit different and improve him, maybe he brings something with him that helps you guys. You indeed need to get to know him like he needs to get to know you guys and the ritme of your gym. If you had this guy since he was white/blue, it would just be a question about refinement of techniek and personal improvement, this can indeed not be known if you just walk in at brown. Maybe it should get formalized what the "personal characteristics" are that should be made your own as part of the curriculum. We had 2 simple rules concerning this in our Judo gyms, and they were teacheth to new students early on. Do no harm to others unless in self defense and bring no shame to our martial arts and or school. Hold our name with some respect, will ya? There are certain crimes out there in the real world we do not condone next to what the police/judge decide. If you commit these atrocities, you are cut from the school/affiliation. We had a wide range of students male/female, all kinds of skin color and even different believes. All of that stayed out, waiting with your ego at the door. One of the things I love about Judo and BJJ, clearly from the same branch of martial arts. They keep me and every bodies ego in check, so I focus on Judo(for me then) and keeping my training partners safe. I'm at the current looking for a BJJ school somewhat in my vicinity for these reasons. I feel like I can learn a lot there, even at my 46, both in techniek and as a person. Sorry for the lots of text, with respect, Hendrik (from Belgium, did Judo between 4.5 years old to my 17).
