I just see spotify and pandora as the modern equivalent of FM radio. I've never paid for either and found that I just naturally migrated to Pandora. I don't use Spotify any more. For my purposes, I just find Pandora more convenient. But now that I have a KZbin Premium account (the only streaming I am willing to pay for because I use it so much for so many reasons), I find it can replace both. My TV, phone and pad all connect to the hi-fi's I have in my house, mancave, shop and cars. So I just find music on youtube. And being a vinyl aficionado, I love those videos where you watch the DJ's playing vinyl from all over the world. They are fun as background music AND video.

I've been in over a dozen bands. My personal opinion about paying musicians is that we might as well return to the pre electronics world. i.e. they only get paid for live performances. I'm good with that. Back around the turn of the century I was at my daughter's high school basketball practice and I saw CD's scattered all over the bleachers. And I noticed something that caused me to take a hard pause: Every single one of them was a home recorded copy. There was not a single "purchased" CD. That's when I realized the music industry is on its way out. I used to say that music will become the equivalent of the free toy in a happy meal. However, streaming has actually made owning a physical copy a thing again. Frankly, it's almost become like trading carts. Two things have capitalized on this: Vinyl and Taylor Swift. And that is a completely different rabbit trail for another time... 😎

Spotify, other than streaming, should have made a store to order or digitally order CDs online. Maybe it would’ve helped with the revenue for musicians (and publishers and Spotify).

They do have merch stores built in for artist and the option to tip artists. Unsure how the split of label to artist goes with the tips

Nice break down. I hope something can change soon. Always good for conscious people to make an effort to do better for what we care about.

Ive noticed that the back catalogues are not very good for independent musicians who maybe changed labels during their careers, Indie labels hate Spotify

Its the users fault, not for using spotify, but for expecting spotify is enough to pay for the continued production of their desired product. People will throw $100 a year at spotify premium but wont visit their favorite band's website and buy a T-shirt. Spotify doesnt make this stuff, they just host it. If people want their artists to make more money, those options are available.

Yup, buying a tshirt might be the best way to support. Unfortunately at live shows the merch is sometimes more expensive because venues are taking a house cut of those sales

@@HiFiTurtle for me its not about the money I have to spend, its about making sure as little of my money is going to corporate shareholders. So I am always going out of my way to try to find more direct means of purchasing digital services
