Your last UVB video was what inspired me to get a solarmeter of my own, and yeah, they aren't cheap.... but keeping reptiles was never advertized to be a cheap hobby. I took the mystery out of it, got the solarmeter, and man, it really changed everything for me.... and totally, um, shed light on why my dragons were acting one way or another. Thank you for doing this follow up video. We've all ran on bad information until we found better information, s'all good. There is a lot of dignity in changing one's mind upon the discovery of better information. All reptile owners are in the same big community trying to help each other out. Nice work on this video!

@@trishaspear8981 It wasn't a lack of energy, it was more like he couldn't see certain colors... green seemed to throw him off. His food was green and he kept missing it with his tongue, and his hammock is green. He would look above and under it several times before trying to find it with his hand.... @@chickensdontsurf As far as food is concerned, I make sure to put them in a small white dish or plate. That reduces the problem of them not seeing any color bc then there is a contrast between the food and the dish to help them see it. One of ours started exhibiting a lack of depth perception and impaired vision going after things on his own. We were concerned enough, we were gonna take him to a vet. I kept observing then discovered he was shedding around his eyes. It wasn't immediately visible, but was interfering with his vision.

You're my hero! I love finding out from you the real ways things are supposed to be done. For instance, everywhere I looked to compile a list of safe veggies & fruit for my dragons, all of them said no kale. Dark leafy greens such as mustard, turnip, collard did not go over well. I'm guessing bc they are tart. I even tried mixing them with other veggies, drizzled juice from fruit and bee pollen. Also, side note, one said something about calcium with vitamin D, would cause their internal organs to become calcified over time.
@wwaxwork
@wwaxwork 3 жыл бұрын
They say that about dark leafy greens because of oxyalic acid. Oxalates bind up calcium making it hard to be sure you are providing the correct ratio of calcium to phosphorus,, if that ration in their diet is wrong it can lead to Metabolic Bone Disease in a reptile. Sure you can safely feed leafy greens if you know what you are doing, and watching the ratios, most average reptile keeps don't have enough knowledge or think that shaking their crickets in calcium is all they have to do.
@chickensdontsurf
@chickensdontsurf 3 жыл бұрын
For adult dragons kale every now and then is fine, and it keeps really well in the fridge. I have read that it is a calcium binder, like the other commenter mentioned. Dragons are really picky and then tend to have their favorites, and you just have to work around that.
@roxannaonuwa187
@roxannaonuwa187 3 жыл бұрын
Example: They love watermelon, but the ratio isn't good. So, even if they will eat any of the greens for me, that's not a good choice either? I do give them a multivitamin and calcium with D. Crickets are for a treat, and when I need to give them vitamins. I am now giving them small soft brown nuggets, by Fluker's Crafted Cuisine Dragon Diet. They really like it, but are staying in their hides right now. This is the first winter our male has exhibited nesting behavior, but he will still come out for water, lay on his blankie looking out his window. If they come out to bask, I feed them. I was under the impression, the dry pellet food wasn't enough by itself and can cause health problems. As such, I was trying to add to their diet. I'm gonna have to go back and look at his videos of preparing food again. What about the calcium with D? Does that cause a problem with their health?

I’m so glad I came across this video. Whew… where do I even start! So here’s what happened to me when I was researching lighting. I was so scared that I was going to burn my bearded dragon or cause a UVB overdose. My set up came with a Reptisun 10.0 CFL. I had also bought a zoomed Reptisun 24inch T5 HO tube set up with a 5.0 UVB bulb and purchased a 10.0 bulb separately because of other videos I watched that said CFLs were bad for bearded dragons. I did so much research before buying our sweet little girl but when I got home I was really torn on which UVB would be appropriate for her 40gallon exo terra tank 36x18x18. I watched a video about bearded dragon lighting on Elles channel and she referred me to gnarly dragons channel where they measured the UVB of cfls and High output tubes with a Zoo Med Digital UV index radiometer and their readings ranged from 1-7 ,even as high as 12 for the T5 HO 10.0 bulb when just a few inches from the light. So I was for sure it would be too strong for my little 40gal tank. The height of the tank is only 18 inches and on the zoo med website it seemed like the 10.0 would be too strong for my tank set up since her basking area and log at it’s highest is about 6 inches from the screen/lights and obviously the lowest spot is 18 inches from the screen/lights. So to be on the safe side I was using the T5 HO 5.0 bulb in the 24inch, but she’s been having some digestion issues recently so I started searching KZbin again for answers and I came across your bearded dragon videos. I probably binge watched 7 or 8 before I came across this one lol. Any way, after watching this video I’ve installed the Reptisun T5 HO 10.0 tube light because I feel way more comfortable after seeing your readings. Thank you so much for making this video, I just subscribed!

That meter you're using says that it is a UVA/UVB (280-400nm) and provides UV Index measurement. The wavelength that animals need to convert light into Vitamin D is only in the UVB range which is 280-315nm. And the actual wavelength used to convert dihydrocholesterol to Vit D precursors is right around 290-295nm. If you stuck a blacklight (~365nm) in your enclosure and measured it with that meter it would show a non-zero UV index reading even though there was no UVB coming from that light. If you want to measure UVB specifically, you need something that is specifically designed for that wavelength range, not a meter that measures UV Index (which is designed for human sunburn protection.)

So i rescued a beardie and Ive had him about a week and a half. He came with a tube uvb light and a heat lamp. We have since installed a ceramic heat emitter. Hes about 5 years old. Is there a way to kind combine heat and tube uvb and nix the heat lamp all together? Thank you for this video weve been researching and researcbing to make sure were doing the best by him. I am absolutely in love with him.

Curious to know your thoughts on giving bearded dragons outdoor time. We have a outdoor enclosure we built and for a couple months in the summer it gets hot enough here to put them outside for 2-3 hours of the day. Rest of the year is shit for lizards here in Canada unfortunately. Great video and thanks for clearing up the misinformation out there.

Hello watch your videos and have a just a quick question for you. I have an atasuki tank 55x24x22 so it’s a decent size tank. Have a bearded dragon and trying to figure out the best setup. Would you recommend an Arcadia t5 14% or a 160watt mercury vapor bulb. This would be on top of mesh. Thank you for any advice.
@Animal1Guy
@Animal1Guy 11 ай бұрын
If you plan do have an elevated basking spot about 10inches or more tall then the arcadia 12% is better, normally i like to have the basking spot on a platform higher making it easier to control temp and UVB

Reptile lighting is a process not a bulb. I stole that comment as I’m not a reptile lighting professional but I do know one through tons of research on this topic. His name is Bob Mac and he runs reptileuv.com. There is tons of scientific data on the website and he dedicated his professional life to better reptile UV lighting. I have no stake in what he sells but I can honestly say that I am able to go beyond a year plus, take my UV bulb to the Vet for testing and have it show very little loss.

Mom's tank is 24x12x16 for her dragon Rueben who is approximately 2 - 3 months old. I'm trying to help. I purchased for Rueben the T5. After listening to this video, I'm beginning to have second thoughts. So with the size of the tank, the CFL bulb is considered the better choice. Correct? In addition, it now makes better sense to have a CFL over a T5 just because, as you indicated, Reuben really doesn't need every inch of tank lit up.
@Animal1Guy
@Animal1Guy 3 жыл бұрын
CFL allows you to control it better, but thats not a huge tank. Tube lights are normally bad when used in tanks that are over 3ft tall. But if you bought a tube that goes the whole length thats not good. you do want a low UVB area. but they make shorter 18in wide tubes.

Hi I’ve watched some of your videos and was wondering if you could answer my question. About 6 months ago my beardie fell off one of his driftwood in his enclosure. He had broken his arm and paralyzed it and was in no obvious pain. He was eating correctly and digesting as he should. He was very active as always. Later on his paralyzed limb fell off and he was moving about as always. He again seemed to be in no noticeable pain and was acting just like he always had. In the last couple of weeks we have noticed shed buildup and what looks like scar tissue around where his arm was. All that is left is a little nub of bone that is surrounded by skin and scales. He has been weaker, less active, and eating less. On his belly there is what looks like dead scales. We have given him baths that seemed to help and helped him with the shed. As of yesterday he looks to be in discomfort and we are not sure what to do.

The early CFL bulbs produced far too much UVC, causing eye damage, and eventually MBD. When using T5 and T8 bulbs(please stop using T8’s, very old bulb tech), you must use a good reflector. I personally would never use a CFL, and look forward to the new wave of UVB producing LED’s being produced.
